This is a standard procedure, not something specific to Le Pen. She will be found sane (in a legal sense).

Is it not the case that U.S. courts can ask specialists to determine whether a defendant is mentally fit and able to understand the charges?

Sure, US judges order psych evaluations all the time.

It's basically a French court trolling the most powerful opposition leader (and by opposition, it is in a very meaningful sense of the word).

Even if I agreed with the French center right or left, I would not think of it necessarily as some kind of victory.
