@zahlanzi saidI was thinking of the Peace Corps or something like it. I think it is a very good idea for spoilt Americans to see how much of the rest of the world lives; helps them to put things in perspective and to realize how fragile democracy is. Democracy is not an entitlement.
"Universal suffrage may turn out to be a noble experiment which fails."
Universal is the only way to prevent the abuse that comes with deciding who is worthy and who isn't.
"I’m in favor of some kind of minimum qualifications for exercising the right to vote."
Who gets to decide what those minimum qualifications are? What about someone changing those minimums? What are ...[text shortened]... away the voting rights of a group you happen to belong to?
Or do you think that can never happen?
@wajoma saidYeah regardless of hoppe or anyone else your advocating a political system one step removed from feudalism. You libertarians are a funny lot it’s almost as if you call yourselves that out of a sense of irony.
Gave you chance to make it right but you chose to call me ignorant instead based on your mind reading abilities.
The land ownership requirement idea pre-dates Hoppe. It was a requirement for the first elections in NZ. It was felt that the land ownership requirement was unfair to Maori men as Maori land was held tribaly and it was in this context that the race based seats ...[text shortened]... d spoodge.com again, it's your usual recourse, after giving the 'elected officials' blah blah spiel.
People all over the world fought long and hard for universal suffrage and I’m sure we’re prepared to do it again. Once the democracy box has been opened you simply cannot close it again.
Do you imagine the poor are going to vote to disenfranchise themselves? Or accept a second class citizen status in the name of your freedom because I guess you’ll want the income level set at a point that doesn’t disenfranchise your good self.

What, like a form of drafting ? 😀 dude it's a bad idea, you can't salvage it. This looks awful like mandatory military service because "it builds character"
"Democracy is not an entitlement."
It shouldn't be a reward for a service someone in power determines.
@moonbus saidNo it’s not an entitlement, suffrage is a birthright.

Imagine a country where you couldn’t restrict someone’s right to own automatic weapons but you could strip them of their voting rights.
@jj-adams saidWell certainly would be America if you did away with universal suffrage, we’re discussing the pitfalls and merits of universal suffrage or qualified suffrage, or was the title not clear enough.
What country would that be?
It certainly isn't America.
