The fact that the goal was to stop the transfer of power to an elected president just makes the riot even more serious, regardless of how likely it was to succeed.

People died because the Capitol police let the protestors in.
The Capitol police broke the law and it doesn't matter they didn't succeed. The Capitol police should be charged with a crime.
