40k a year for ten years is a lot to a farmer trying to keep their head above water.

Key Changes from April 2026

Capped 100% Relief: The full 100% IHT relief for combined qualifying agricultural and business property will be capped at the first £1 million of value per individual.

Partial Relief Above Cap: Assets above the £1 million threshold will receive 50% relief, effectively being taxed at a 20% IHT rate (half the standard 40% rate).

Transferable Allowance: The unused £1 million allowance of a deceased spouse or civil partner can be transferred to the survivor, potentially enabling a couple to pass on up to £2 million of agricultural/business assets tax-free.

Payment in Instalments: Any IHT liability on agricultural or business property can be paid in interest-free instalments over a 10-year period.

Farm kids work hard and start helping around the farm at an early age.
They don't come home from school and watch TV like you did.
They deserve to keep every penny they get when their parents pass on.

In the USA the Republicans in Congress would just give the farmers handfuls of billions of dollars. So they can pretend that they are running successful businesses.

Apparently they're not doing a very good job farming the land and feeding the country. If the land doesn't make money why is it worth so much?
