As a nation, we must figure out why a large minority of mostly white U.S. citizens feel so disaffected. I believe it is a mistake to attribute it to racism, white supremacy, xenophobia and homophobia. Those are red herring scapegoats. For the last 30 years the middle class has been steadily shrinking. The U.S. safety net, especially for health care, is slim and frayed. Even those earning 6 figures are often just several paychecks away from defaulting on a mortgage should they lose their employment. Since unions have been busted, workers have very little recourse against the corporations that employ them. Unfortunately, rich power brokers have managed to convince a large minority of voters that elected officials are at fault, not large, politically powerful corporations. Nick Hanauer, a billionaire, has a TED presentation that has become legend. "Beware, fellow plutocrats, the pitchforks are coming."

Our leaders have the ability to wrest control from the politically-powerful corporations. Therefore, I think the fault does fall on the elected leaders. Moreover, elected leaders are the segment of authority where we, as citizens, have some control. Even if the problem can be squarely laid on bad business practices, the elected leaders are the ones who enact change. They seem to be more worried about getting ratioed on twitter than focusing on their jobs.

Disaffected is a fine and normal part of democratic societies. It's the step beyond into radicalization that's worrisome. If you are disaffected, protest and vote for leaders who'll address your concerns. If you're radicalized you storm the capital claiming without evidence the election was stolen.

Well, fear and poverty do not mix for healthy choices.
