For awhile now, people have joked about Bush declaring Martial Law and staying in power after his term is over. Is that such a joke anymore? I'm no bush basher, but this is very, very scary.

The relevant part is Sec. 1076

"Public Law 109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122) (2), which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder."

😉 Little too much paranoia here I believe

Since news articles about this bill seem to be few and far between:

Paranoia? Perhaps, but where are the checks and balances? This just ain't right.

I've been searching, looking for the positive spin on this, and have come up empty handed so far....

http://leahy.senate.gov/press/200609/092906b.html

Tom Leahy says, "Because of this rubberstamp Congress, these provisions of this conference report add up to the worst of all worlds. We fail the National Guard, which expects great things from us as much as we expect great things from them. And we fail our Constitution, neglecting the rights of the States, when we make it easier for the President to declare martial law and trample on local and state sovereignty. "

Yeah. I'm old, but not quite that old. Try to look at it this way. if you cant stop 30 million Mexicans from walking over your border, how could you possibly hold martial law over 300 million people armed to the teeth?

That wasn't very nice.

However, it was funny, and a good point.

Republicans have two stereotypes: 1. NRA members 2. Sheep

Democrats have two stereotypes as well: 1. No guns 3. Whiners

It looks like we are now pacified. Bring on the martial law!

Idiots like you who don't respect Fundamental Rights or believe in anything the Framers did are the ones who hate everything the country is supposed to stand for. Why don't you do us all a favor and take one of those phallic symbols you like to caress and blow your "brains" out?

read it again. it says "public disorder".

if there's some major public disorder going on around y'all's houses, you'd be the first ones crying to the national guard for help.

so, why did they make this law? any background?

oh, ho! probably it was Katrina! ....

whine whine whine whine whine whine whine ... not enough then, too much now ... never satisfied ....

What would Katrina have to do with it? You're a moron; you don't need the Feds to call out the National Guard for natural disasters - the State governors don't hesitate to.

I see you have a fairly low opinion of a lot of people here. This is the true tragedy of this cyber medium, we never get to meet you sweet things in person.
