I agree. Serena at her peak, was just as good as any male player on the planet. Even Djoko.
Serena herself, during an interview with David Letterman, said she would stand no chance against male players, saying "it's [men's tennis] like a completely different sport".

I still stand by my statement that non-pros of any gender would get wrecked by Serena.

@vivify
Well sure, just like any other sport. You wouldn't try to put Lebron James competing against a HS basketball team would you? I mean a Lebron TEAM against a HS.
Or the highest Kyu rank in Go Vs the lowest rank Dan, the low rank Dan would clobber the high rank Kyu.

@Duchess64

Agree with this. John Lloyd, a UK tennis player in the 70s was married to Chris Evert. Lloyd was reasonably succesful, reached major final (and lost), probably peak ranking was 20 or so.

Chris Evert was, of course, a hugely successful female player, winning multiple majors and ranked #1 for years in her career.

An interviewer asked them if they played each other in practice and who won. They just laughed, John won all of the time.

Ps...why isn't this in the much neglected Sports Forum?

@vivify...He did, indeed beat Margaret Court.
Chrissy Everet was the best female of that era.
By the way, Riggs and Billie Jean went on to become the best of friends.

@Blood-On-The-Tracks....The best man will ALWAYS beat the best women in tennis. That is not to say, on his best day, the best woman would beat a very good player...''Men are too strong'', that came Billie Jean herself ...You might beat Bobby Fischer, one out of fifty....But, I'm sure that Evert and her husband were playing it for fun....A 70 year old man would never beat the top female....Well, never is a long time, but T would cover all bets and give odds.

2nd line. Mixing of pronouns?

Bobby Fischer??

It goes further than best/best in each gender, as illustrated by my John Lloyd/Chrissie Evert story. HE was around #25, SHE was #1

Ya. Women don't ever see 140 mph serves.

You’re quoting me on Bobby Riggs?
I’ve never heard of the man (or woman) and have never posted anything about him (or her) in my life.

Or is Bobby Riggs Serena Williams?
I don’t bloody know. Do you think I actually follow tennis?

Seemingly in the 2015 open (are there closed tennis matches? In cages? Nude tennis I would watch), Serena served at 126 miles an hour. 1 mile an hour faster than the fastest man at that open.

Anyway, the point of the original post is about average men thinking they’d stand a chance.

I was not the one who brought up Riggs, I merely responded to another poster who did. And I never said Riggs was an "average" tennis player or made any "comparison" with him.

This is poor reading comprehension by Duchess. Again.
