This is a note about just one case, maybe making the headlines because it happened close to the U.S., but the truth is that Mexico is out of control. Period. People are getting shot from car to car, 'disappeared', or executed. It is Sicilia.

The drug gangs cannot be stopped, simply because they have better weapons AND because the police and judges have a price. The U.S. should look to the south instead of the Middle East. The neighbor, friend, business partner, ally, and buddy is in deep crap and it seems it won't go out of it by itself.

What would be the solution? UN troops? Coup d'etat? Legalize drugs?

Legalize drugs is a start. I think the "privateer" idea might work too; supplement the police with private security organizations. Those who do their work well will get the contracts.

See this thread and this article:

They should talk to Giuliani too. He knows how to handle this crap. He cleaned up NYC from the mob after all.

Surprisingly, my friend, Giuliani was an advisor for Mexico City authorities years ago and, political colors aside, the socialdemocrats governing Mexico City are doing really, really well. The executions Sicily style are not taking place in Mexico City, but in the North and Southwest of the country. So perhaps Giuliani should should be advisor for the whole country, not just Mexico City, you're right.

I thought the southwest of Mexico was the Pacific Ocean...

The problem with using outside troops (UN, US, whatever) is that Mexico's a big place, and no outside agency can put enough troops out to hold more than a few points. Thus, the private organizations/militias idea. I mean, the US can't even control Iraq and Mexico's much, much bigger.

Yeah....let's interfere in more domestic scenes of frivolity...

Destroy the profit margin on drugs and 70% of world crime will be wiped out in a week's time.

Yup, good point.

However, if the main cities of the North and the state of Michoacan are secured, the focal points of violence would ease down.

The problem with the Northern cities and Michoacan is that they are passages of drugs into the U.S. Obvious when speaking about Tijuana, Laredo, Nogales, Juarez. When it comes down to Michoacan, it is because there are large areas in the middle of nowhere from where the speed boats take off with drugs and head up North.

Then again, the traffic would find other ways.

Yeah, perhaps that solution is only epidermic. It's just that it hurts me to see that mafia violence happening in the same streets where I wandered around when a kid.

🙁

Neither the United States, nor the UN can fix this, so until the men of Mexico nut up and have a revolution, I guess the alternative will be for them to continue crossing a dangerous desert, brave the gangs and coyotes, and work at menial jobs in the United States.

Interesting debating style. You suggest the legalisation of drugs as a solution. Shav proposes something similar, by saying get rid of the profit margin, ie: legalise, and you respond with this trash.

You really don't understand the concept of debating, do you?
