for those of you who prefer traditional art, can you explain what it is you don't like about modern art?

modern art gets a bad press. it is labelled everything from being pretentious posturing to sensation seeking.
i disagree. modern art reflects the culture and society that it emerges from. it challenges the contemporary art world and society until it is appropriated by the cultural elite and then becomes mainstream. then new artists emerge.
for ...[text shortened]... it is you don't like about modern art? what do you think is better with traditional art works?
I tend not to over analyse - if it's a piece of visual art I look at it and decide whether I like it or not. Sometimes works of art just make you think "wow!".
With modern art I tend to find it mostly makes think "er...yeah, whatever" at best.
In my opinion there are two fundamental questions:
1. Does the viewer value the execution/workmanship of the piece of art?
2. Does the viewer value the underlying idea?
I have seen too many modern pieces of art that look like they were done by someone with little artistic talent. And far too many that leave you thinking "So what?" when you assess the underlying idea.
A lot of modern art fails on so many levels that this is the reason why the terms of the discussion tend to focus on the tired 'what is art?' dimension.
But what do I know? I'm a phillistine.

I knew you'd show up in this thread, Goliath.
Could you find a specific modern artwork (maybe a painting from the link I posted) that you really hate and say why? I too find the general "what is art" discussion tedious.
So let's pick one - the one by Andy Collins. Please, please read the text under the picture.
Crap execution and a crap idea. Voila.
Originally posted by catfoodtimNo, Tracey Emin has no talent. She is the artistic equivalent of a snake oil salesman. I honestly don't understand how she gets away with it.
nothing wrong with being a philistine. me too.
has emin talent? do you think the underlying ideas i her pillowcase are shallow and make you think 'so what?'
The pillowcase (and *esepcially* the nonsense written underneath the photo) has now made my blood boil.

We are encouraged to believe that Andy Collins' work stems from a sort of fetishism rather than an idea per se. Strikes me that these paintings would look good in a doctor's waiting room!

i suspect most people will hate it. how can a pillowcase be art?
