All film camera stuff before that and there were several cases where artifacts appeared on the final film after the negative was exposed, some problem with the negative film.
It was either that or an engine fart which if you look close you can see the actual shuttle engine where the artifact starts.
It certainly wasn't a mistake with a model. That is ridiculous and you know it.
