Navalny Poses an Existential Threat to Putin

Debates

Do Saturday's country-wide protests, with more than 1500 arrests, demonstrate Putin's vulnerability?

Of course they do. Just as massacring the Uyghurs and trampling all over Hong Kong are great points of nationalistic pride in Pekin.

You do realise that the vast majority of Dutch people have either no idea what happened in Indonesia* or find it unacceptable how the Dutch behaved there?

Not once have I heard a Dutch person speak with pride about it (although I have heard Indonesian people people who weren’t opposed to it speak; I presume they were collaborating with the Dutch at the time, but I wasn’t in a position to ask questions).

* after living in the Netherlands for many years, I have to say that the average knowledge of history here is quite abysmal; especially compared to the average knowledge on most other subjects.

I have never heard the Dutch claim they’ve never been racist. God only knows who you speak to.

The Dutch have pride, since the 60’s of having a liberal attitude (and the riots the last few days are generally upsetting for them).
Before the 60’s the Dutch had what they call political “verzuiling”, meaning you were brought up in a political / religious stream and stuck in it.
They broke that down (not everywhere and not all of it) and that is the basis of their perspective on liberal attitudes.

What I said: the average Dutch person disagrees with their part in Indonesia or doesn’t have an inkling about it (but many Dutch people don’t know which side they were on in WW1 and think the war against Spain liberated them from the Spanish).

The Dutch are a very “in today” bunch.
Generally.

I've had it up to --->here--- with that phony Putin.
He poisons Navalny with a WMD (Novichok), arrests him when he comes home,
arrests his wife, arrests protesters that object to the kremlin's/Putin's arrests.

The numbers of people arrested, btw, set a record for an protest event and for one city as well. Putin is a thug!

This UTube story of "Putin's Palace" was released by Navalny's group, FBK, who did the research. It scored record hits. Remember the 2014 Sochi Olympics costing $50 BILLION??? Yes, not a typo ----- https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/did-the-winter-olympics-in-sochi-really-cost-50-billion-a-closer-look-at-that-figure/2014/02/10/a29e37b4-9260-11e3-b46a-5a3d0d2130da_story.html

Read about Putin's Palace and see where the lucre went - or some of it. Putin is loaded.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/20/europe/putin-palace-navalny-russia-intl/index.html

I just wonder why Russian people have not had a revolution, get rid of Putin and everyone in the kremlin, FSB, GRU, get them all!!

I don’t know of whom you speak. But one person on RHP can’t account for a general Dutch attitude.

The Dutch don’t seem to have a willful ignorance of history. It’s just not high on their agendas.

Yes. The Afrikaners were Dutch. Reagan and Thatcher supported apartheid.

However, you will obviously be aware that in 1961 the Dutch were the only Western nation to vote in favour of an anti-apartheid resolution at the UN.
And that from that moment on the anti-apartheid movement in the Netherlands was one of the loudest in the world.

And that, indeed, when Mandela was freed, the Netherlands was the first country he visited.

You’ve had it with Putin, yet trump is acceptable???

Hahahahahahahahahaha

Re-railing this conversation-train back to Putin.
He betrays a hidden sense of fear by having arrested and incarcerated a political rival.
Thus far, he hasn't assassinated him.
Not for a lack of covertly trying however.

Putin knows that his hour is coming.
The pumpkin carriage is waiting.
And a glass jack-boot lies upon a Kremlin stair.

I’m not sure if there will be a successful rebellion and I fear for the safety of those Russians caught up in the inevitable backlash from this ex KGB despot but there is a certain satisfaction in seeing him face the same sort of turmoil and unrest that he has actively fermented on the streets of his perceived enemy states.
One thing is for sure, if Russia blows it will blow big, it doesn’t have the socio political elasticity that our pseudo democracies have.
