If Michael Howard had shown that much humility and humanity in the campaign as he did in his resignation speech he might have won more votes.
So who would you like to see the Tories elect as leader to be a credible opposition to Tony Blair?
I notice that even Mr Howard didn't trust his own party enough to let them decide. (if you let the blue rinse Tory membership decide it would be a close between call David Davis and Nick Griffin)

If it's the current parliamentary party, there's not much hope for them either, given that the moderate wing of the party got decimated in 97 and still hasn't recovered. The Tories are suffering a problem which dogs many parties - the party will appoint whoever sings their partisan tune the best, rather than someone who's actually palatable to swing voters.

I thought Howard seemed like a good leader...after Hague and the other one.
I mean, can any party be so incompetent in choosing leaders that will appeal to the public.
Ken Clarke was popular with the electorate but not the Tory Party. But they chose hopeless baldies (note: amount of hair does seem to have an effect!).
Boris for leader 🙂

They should have went with Heseltine or Clarke after Thatcher. But the right wing wouldn't have it.
They're basically screwed now.
Party on.
