No Country for New "Messiahs"

Countries that look to a charismatic "messiah" to lead them in difficult times often get into trouble. From Idi Amin in Uganda to Pol Pot in Cambodia, Kim Jong Il in North Korea and Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe -- men have "led" their people to perdition after describing themselves as the only men capable of leading their populations through difficult times, says Olliver North. Back here in America, we've largely escaped the consequences of having a messianic leader… until now. Blessed with great oratory gifts and a very high degree of personal charisma, Barack Obama has caused celebrities like Oprah Winfrey to swoon and ask: "Is he the One?" Sen. Obama himself has said, "We cannot wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for." Instead of looking to a messiah to solve our problems, maybe we should start looking for our own solutions? If we don't, we might learn the hard way what happens when a false messiah can't deliver… just like France did under Napoleon and Nazi Germany did under Hitler.

I agree that we should be looking to ourselves for solutions. However, it is also clear that the President, if he so chooses, can cause many serious outcomes. Eight years and look at the country.

I'm surprised that you would quote Oliver North. If you think Murtha betrayed our country, surely you have equal disdain for Oliver North.

Also, the link the Messianic is going way out on a limb. Obama has never said anything close to "I'm the only one that can do this." Surely he has made arguments that he is the best person for President. All candidates do that.

"The Great Communicator" never stuck his nose in the air, seemingly to receive the wisdom of god, during his speeches. Not just because he couldn't remember how to, but because he didn't have Oprah to anoint him.

GRANNY.

It's not a wish, it's just a fact.

But if you Americans decide to kill another one of your presidents there's nothing we (the rest of the world) can do about it.

The storylines are becoming increasingly parralelled though..Young senator elected on a promise of a new hope....let's hope Obama treats Biden better than Kennedy treated Johnson.

Were the US' founding fathers "charismatic messiahs"?

i think jfk was a bit more specific in his "hope" platform...Saying "hope" and "change" is meaningless without specifics.
'you Americans'---why is it that so many non-Americans post about America on rhp? Is it because American is worth talking about when their country isn't?

Nonsense, he is "The One". I know because "The Opra" says so.

I've started many threads about Canada but they die quickly because there aren't many canadians on here and most people that aren't canadian have no clue about canada (esp americans)

The only reason the US is worth talking about is because you guys have a big giant military that you insist on using to blow people up. 400 million lunatics with guns means the rest of us have to keep an eye on you guys
