What about George Washington?
The original colonists were a pretty hardy and independent bunch. However, when they asked Washington to be their king, he was principled enough to turn them down.

A nation that is looking to expand their empire isn't going to let a peaceful country alone, just because you're willing to ne ill get together and sing that CocaCola song while we all die of bowel rot.

GRANNY.
What makes you think we would be looking the US for protection?????

In this magical fantasy land that you dream up where Russia, for reasons unbeknownst to everyone except maybe you, DSR, and karl Rove, I'm pretty sure our colonial ancestors across the pond would step up to the plate long before you WW2 dithers figured out how you could benefit before getting involved.

but if we (the US) were not standing behind you with a big hockey stick, you would be drinking vodka & driving Lada's....... Oh, by the way, how is paying that GST & PST?
Geez, dace. You're still all over the place.

Reality Check. Russia would never invade canada. More to the point. If the US didn't exist, then Canada would have occupied it with help from the British...actually, that was the plan until you yanks refused to drink your tea...

Secondly, the GST/PST are welcome in most parts of Canada since it means we don't have to pay medical bills. It's a wonderful trade-off and a huge burden lifted from most people's shoulders. It's a quality of life issue for us.

In fact, most of us smarterer people wish the govt would actually RAISE the GST!! Because if they did that, we could lower income taxes thus finally shifting the tax structure to a consumption tax rather than a working tax. Perhaps one day.

I'm ecstatic that you won't need our help. Actually, you never did. That would allow the US to maintain a smaller military and use those savings to expand our social services to our citizens. I agree with you that we would be there too late with too little. We'd probably try to occupy Canada for eternity and waste trillions of dollars per year. So i see it as a win-win situation.
You're most likely correct that you won't get in a scuffle with the Russions over oil drilling in the artic, certainly not in the near future. And since Canada has done away with nukes and Russia, China etc. have stopped targeting Canada...no need to worry. Why we should think we need to have a military alliance with our neighbos in this relatively peaceful period is just plain stupidy. Time we looked out for ourselves only.

Although, you might want to consider giving Canada's motion before the UN a fair shake before you close up shop.

We call it, "The Responsibility to Protect" It might be right up your alley.

Oliver North? Didn't he commit treason or something? Oh yes. He did...

And isn't it a clever ploy by the that naughty little intrigant to mention Obama and Hitler in one sentence? Yeah. See how the rotten little brains of Republican spin-doctering work?

But what can you expect when a party has to rely on bastards like North to get a dirty job done?

You know what they say: If the shoe fits, wear it.
