Florida parents upset by Michelangelo’s ‘David’ force out principal
A Florida charter school principal said she was forced to resign this week after some parents complained about their sixth-grade students being shown images of Michelangelo’s “David” statue in class, with one parent believing the art lesson on the Renaissance masterpiece amounted to pornographic material.
Hope Carrasquilla of Tallahassee Classical School in Leon County, Fla., said she offered her resignation during an emergency school board meeting on Monday after she was given an ultimatum by the board to resign or be fired, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. The principal said she was not given a reason she was asked to resign, but believes complaints the school board received from parents over the lesson on the Michelangelo statue played a role in what happened.
Let's put it to the Morality Police on this forum: is the "David" statue pornographic? Should children be banned from museums displaying Classical or Renaissance masterworks?
@soothfast saidHow silly to start a post, using art as a vehicle for your rage. You do not even know that you are suggesting that children not be shown a piece of artwork with male genitalia. Uh, they already know it, esp if they have a brother. Don't renderings of Eve show breast?

Slow start here, soothfast. But here again, the school teaches art by Michaelangelo, I want my children to learn about art. I can choose, so can this Hope person who will choose to see it another way. I love this country.
@averagejoe1 saidThis is free-associative word salad of the well-tossed variety.

Anyway, we're not even talking about wee tots here. The children are in 6th grade, so, about 12 years old.
@soothfast saidThen this post needs to reset its issue. Not the children, nor Michelangelo, but the mental state of the mother. Pitiful. I abstain, I know nothing of mental issues short of what I pick up on RHP. Which is a gracious plenty!

@soothfast saidThe statue of David is not pornographic.

It’s not even circumcised. And that for “David”. But, besides the point.
Nudity is not pornographic.
Sexualisation of something is.
From the article:
"The principal said she was not given a reason she was asked to resign, but believes complaints the school board received from parents over the lesson on the Michelangelo statue played a role in what happened."
Methinks there's more going on here than the ex-principal is letting on, and the statue of David is just a red herring she's throwing out to garner sympathy.
For all we know (and for all she knows} the statue of David had nothing to do with her firing.
@jj-adams saidNice dodge around the question.

@soothfast saidYou mean these?
Nice dodge around the question.
" is the "David" statue pornographic? Should children be banned from museums displaying Classical or Renaissance masterworks?"
My answer is no to both.
I can't imagine any rational person thinking otherwise.
And I wasn't dodging the question, I was pointing out that the ex-principal is just guessing about David being the reason and she probably has more to explain than that.
@soothfast saidI would not say it's pornographic and I don't think children should be banned from museums or exhibitions displaying its likeness, but it's quite reasonable for parents to decide they don't want their 11 and 12 years olds exposed to it (no pun intended) and that decision should not be made unilaterally by the school.

Did that part fly right over your head?
This is the way your handlers manipulate you . You are posting this as fact, but the article doesnt say that.
@mott-the-hoople saidYou and JJ can start a dodge ball tag team.

My question in the OP is a hypothetical. It's motivated by the Moral Police positions espoused in the thread about drag queens. Try to keep up.
@soothfast saidHave to ask you. Given my stance that only parents decide what is good for their children, would I qualify as Moral Police?

@Soothfast
In my opinion, I feel strongly parents should have a say, as the students are their children, and they pay the taxes that makes it all go.
In this case here, the parents say "no", but I'd have to see more particulars to say if the firing of the teacher was Ok to do.
