At the same time the Bush administration was negotiating a still elusive agreement to keep the U.S. military in Iraq, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama (D-Ill.) tried to convince Iraqi leaders in private conversations that the president shouldn't be allowed to enact the deal without congressional approval. Should Obama be hanged for treason?

On what grounds does this qualify as treason?

He is within his rights to express his opinion. He is doing so with an allied government.

If he is to be hanged for treason, then perhaps Reagan should have been hanged for his work in freeing the Iranian hostages before he became president.

You are reaching.

I would you argue that you should be punished for making a terroristic threat. In fact, you should be held as an enemy combatant.

According to many dictionaries, treason can be defined as:

* a crime that undermines the offender's government
* disloyalty by virtue of subversive behavior
* treachery: an act of deliberate betrayal

Therefore, I think Obama's actions are treasonous.

Certainly Obama is within his rights to express his opinion, however, he's not the current president, nor was he acting as an agent of the current administration. By meeting with the Iraqi leaders privately, he undermines the current administration's efforts; he also sends a mixed signal about what our goals in Iraq are. Moreover, what if the Iraqi leaders follow Obama's advice and then John McCain gets elected?
