It seems that this UN scandal just keeps getting bigger and bigger but Kofi Annan ain't going down without a fight..

He has now implicated the US and UK governments as having also been involved in the corruption and having known about oil shipments going from Iraq to Turkey and Jordan under their watch.
Is this just an attempt to shift some of the blame from the UN or does it now require some serious answers from both governments..

There were two ways the Iraqis cheated -smuggling and inflating prices.
Most oil smuggling passed through parts of northern Iraq controlled by US-allied Kurdish militias into Turkey, or into Jordan. The US Fifth fleet patrolled the Persian Gulf but it was either incompetence or complicity that allowed $5.7 billion of oil to be shipped outside the Oil for Food programme.
Kickbacks could be detected by examing contracts. And the 60 members of the US team, plus other representatives of the Security Council, were extremely vigilant - in July 2002 over $5 billion of contracts were on hold. Over 36 000 contracts were checked carefuly for military or "dual-use" goods but no contract on the oil for food programme was ever held up by the United States because of corruption.
So the United States was not interested in corruption on the oil for food programme prior to their invasion and as a Security Council member, bears responsibility for the diversion of funds away from food. Their campaign now is self-serving and hypocritical..

We'll see.
If it turns out to be the case then -- Question?
"Why does a hanger-on have such ability to scam the world?"
If not then... nevermind. SVW bights the dust again.
