You need to read a little more ... that has already happened.

It has not solved the problem.
It has opened a can of worms - that type of behaviour normally does.

I honestly hope your right. 🙂

But, to the best of my personal judgement, judging from all the articles I have read about research into renewables, progress in renewables will come too late for us unless we greatly speedup research. I honestly hope very much to be proven completely and utterly wrong (as I always want with my grimmer predictions) but, until if and when that day comes, I think we should assume the worst and take urgent and drastic measures now to prevent disaster later.

I agree with everything that article says. It basically says that the US public are generally deluding themselves to believe the totally absurd and delusional belief that we can all just keep on running our cars as often as we do now despite the fact the oil is running ever scarcer because economical alternatives will be found in time (there is currently only evidence to the contrary) and with no significant extra cost (again, there is currently only evidence to the contrary) because we can somehow, miraculously, all get something for nothing.

Obviously they “choose” to believe this because this is what they want to be true. I am afraid it is not just the US public that have these dilutions for I see it in the UK public as well.

Allow people to drill off shore and in the US for one thing or go nuclear etc. There are a wide arange of oppurtunities that the federal government is castrating at this juncture. If it were not of the federal government restricting these activities, they would be in full swing!!!

I would say most of the West is deluding themselves, a Paradigm shift is in the works....

The cheapest oil that simply gets pumped up from underground caverns is likely to not last for all that long.

There is also oil in sands and other places ... with some very dirty processing it can yield oil for your car; there are lots of places with this stuff. New ways are also being investigated to convert coal into oil; and there is lots and lots of coal.

The question then becomes: if the relatively clean oil we have been using up til now is too dirty for our planet yet we used it all up, then will we simply start using the even dirtier stuff?

For anyone that is interested: I have posted a large article (4629 words) at a political forum:

http://www.politic.co.uk/planet/10266-world-famine-coming-before-oil-runs-out.html

My article there expresses the reasons why I think that a world shortage of oil could cause a world famine.

I'm not worried. Even if there were no new discoveries and all the oil the United States is sitting on but the Democrats won't let us drill for went unrealized, the market will still sort this out:

Uh, Bush boy has refused to drill offshore too. Get some balance in your criticism.

Just sit back and watch Rome burn as our politicians do NOTHING!!
You a goldman sachs believer?? they're the first ones to quote the 200 bux/barrel number. Guess what. GS has the largest oil futures fund in the world. Guess who benefits if oil goes up?

A more sound number has oil in the 80-90 bux/barrel by next year.

We are experiencing an oil price bubble, and like all bubbles, the price will collapse when the speculation ends.

You know Brazil's doing good stuff with ethanol fuel, though I hear there's controversy over working conditions over there.
Some cannot do the things you suggest; others choose not to give up the compfort and safety of an SUV for the dangerous sport of motorcycle driving on the streets of America.

How bout just a regular car instead of a suv. Trade 15 MPG for 40 MPG and watch the price of gas complaints go in the tank...so to speak
