One hardline mullah replaced another hardline mullah. There was no regime change at all--merely an unplanned succession within the same regime, which would have happened just the same, a little later anyway.

He did not chnaghe leadership, he killed a few and a few of the same kind (maybe even a bit worse) stepped up.

The Iranians did stage protests and had scores killed, but then there was no sign of support by the USA.
