I saw the news today, prince harry dressed as a nazi to a fancy dress party.

He gave a written apology to eveyone.

They are asking him to visit a death camp and get educated.

I say more time and effot should be put into stoping the real nazis.

Look this apology and idea of visiting a death camp is pure BS. These two boys have been indulged their entire life in a fantasy world that distorts their entire way of thinking. I'd take aways the car, excuse me, cars. Then I'd take him out of private school and put him in a school for juvenile delinquents. Then I'd ship him over to SVW and let him bust his balls. Oh, yea, expense account? What expense account?

I'd say having your mother killed in a car crash with her lover and having your parents failed marriage discussed in every tabloid every second day is worst than spending time with a bunch of juvenile delinquents.

They've probably never had the enjoyment of visiting a McDonnalds without everyone staring at them and pointing, or the pleasure of knowing a girl just liked them for who they are inside, and not their title. I think back off the judgemental crud for a second. They've actually done alot to try to live normal lives, including helping the less fortunite in 3rd world countries. Sure Harry wore an outfit in bad taste, but heck, I'm sure we've all done stupider things where we were 19.

Hmm, well its kinda like wearing a grim reaper costume to a funeral, perhaps funny, but most likely in bad taste.

Yes but this was'nt a funeral, it was a costume party. It was a costume at a costume party. I have seen people dress up as genghis kahn, he killed thousands, where was the outrage? What if he had dressd as the devil, would there have been outrage? What about a vampire a creature that feeds on human blood, surely this is offensive? Many options, someone will be offended by something.

It's just a costume party. If he joined the nazi party, now that would be an entirely new debate.

I wonder if there may have been more to it? Hitler really admired the English. Their Empire - especially the way they controlled India with a small force - inspired him.

The Saxons were German and I think the Winsor family were Germanic as well (my Mom says so anyway). She also claims that one of the former Kings who abdicated, an ancestor of Harry's (father? grandfather?) was very friendly with Hitler.

The issue here is that the ideological (is that the right word?) descendents of the Nazis still exist and are still dangerous. They were probably highly inspired by this event.

The British Royal family do have some German blood in them (amongst other nationalities).
At the beginning of the last century the family name was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha which came from Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert whose father was the Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. The name was diplomatically changed to a more English sounding Windsor after the outbreak of the 1st world war. Historically, royalty would marry royalty which inevitably meant scouring other countries for suitable partners, hence the mixed bag of anscestry amongst European royal families. Prince Philip, the current Queen's husband is Greek.

Well done in creating a completely pointless comparison. Costume party!! Many things worn to a costume party could be found offensive in some context....... or do i need to start giving specific examples (yawn bore) I'm sure you can work it out..........

Take a look at what Harrys gap year of helping third world countries has included:

Trip to Kenya to work on a game farm, owned by one of his friends dads, from the press footage it seemed more of an excuse for a party on a farm, with some riding thrown in.

Also did a bit of a stint in Aussie if I recall right.

Then a trip to Argentina at another friends farm.

Then a stay in Cape Town and Durban(SA), staying at exclusive hotels and pratying a lot.

Last I checked was a trip to Mozambique, with his girlfriends family, at another exclusive resort.

Yes his upbringing must have been traumatic, but other kids have had to endure far worst without the luxurious safety-net of the royal millions to save him. So I think, if you want a "normal" life, then lose the money and try do what "normal" kids do, ie: WORK. At a time when the anti-monarch debate seems to be cropping up more and the queen(Head of state) loses more and more power, I would think that as a royal you would try to be showing people the positive good you can do apart from use public money.

Re: Its just a costume.

Yes, it is just a costume, a costume which respresents a war in which around 20 odd million people died, how must it be for the old man who fought in Normandy seeing that on the front cover?

There also were a lot of murky accusations against English royals for Nazi links, if I recall correctly one royal was openly pro-Hitler and wanted Britain to support the Nazis. So wearing that uniform is very bad taste.

Prince Philip had the surname of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg (which, like Phil himself, is about as Greek as lederhosen) until 1947 when he took his mothers maiden name ( Battenburg) and made into the more English sounding Mountbatten. Just as his wife´s family name was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha until they named themselves after Windsor Castle in World War 1. German names were not popular then - particularly Gotha which was the name of an air force bomber.

So following Englsih family tradition, it was Harold Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg who was wearing the nazi shirt to the party.

I had always thought Prince Philip was a Greek. But its difficult to say for sure what nationality any royal is with all the inter-marrying that has gone on. 🙂

This is what www.royal.gov.uk has to say about it :

***
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, was born Prince of Greece and Denmark in Corfu on 10 June 1921.

He was born the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece. His paternal family is of Danish descent - Prince Andrew was the grandson of King Christian IX of Denmark.

His mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg, the eldest child of Prince Louis of Battenberg and sister of Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Prince Louis became a naturalised British subject in 1868, joined the Royal Navy and rose to become an Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord in 1914. During the First World War he changed the family name to Mountbatten and was created Marquess of Milford Haven. Prince Philip adopted the family name of Mountbatten when he became a naturalised British subject and renounced his Royal title in 1947.

Prince Louis married one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters. Thus, The Queen and Prince Philip both have Queen Victoria as a great-great-grandmother. They are also related through his father's side. His paternal grandfather, King George I of Greece, was Queen Alexandra's brother.
****

I did a search for Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg and it turns out that this was the name of Phil's great grandfather - Duke Wilhelm von Schleswig-etc - a german.

Nobody is actually suggesting that wearing this costume makes the wee tw*t a nazi.
The point is that it is phenomenally irresponsible for someone in his position. Because of his priveleged postion, he can't be like any other 20 year old. He knows his every move could end up on the front page of the tabloids, and yet he does this.
If he aspires to be an officer in the army and, who knows, King of the UK, head of the Commonwealth and all that jazz, he has to be responsible and sensible.
If he wants to act like an ordinary 20-year-old, do daft things and enjoy himself, then he should withdraw his application to Sandhurst, give up his right to the succession and go get a proper job .
Or is he not familiar with the expression about cakes and eating them?
