There are a lot of horror stories told about prison, and while you should always watch your back, I've always suspected prison rape is something with a frequency rate far lower than people think. Ditto homophobia: jails, maybe, but most prisoners on long-term sentences will get along with anyone precisely because they have to to stay sane. Jails can be rowdier and less predictable (the only example of a cliched jail-type inmate I've seen in a max was a remand Lifer, and I saw one other Lifer actively sneering at him for playing the role, in this case of Main Location Lifer mocking sex offenders), but then again, you're not going to have to put up with it as long.

Don't worry about shanks, showers and beatings - just keep yourself to yourself at first, play it cool, get to know people, get yourself a decent job on enhanced regime and bide your time. It'll fly over. If you want to know what the real evil is in prison, think more about bureaucracy, passing the buck and tedium - from a staff point of view that's all I ever see.

They are, though - which is why passing the buck and pointless systemic paper-pushing is the norm. I don't know much about the American or NZ penal systems, but here they'll put you on Constant Obs and open an ACCT (suicide and self-harm) form on you if they hear so much as a flippant comment. The reason is that if they don't and you do end up swinging from a length of ligature, they'll pay for it in blood.

The best jail system from the point of view of economy, security, effectiveness, and safety, was that known as the 'Silent System' practised in some American states during the 19th century and reported on by Dickens in his' American Notes'.

A brilliant system if ever there was one, the only drawback being that it turned petty criminals into furious homicidal maniacs, which wasn't economical, secure, effective or safe.

If you can't do the time don't do the crime. 😉

I assume this is still the drink driving thing?

Drink driving is not cool or anything, it's bloody stupid. People who drive while drunk repeatedly deserve to be locked up as they have shown a complete disregard for other people's safety.

If you had to deal with the accidents that drunk people have, and live with those things you might be a little more responisble and considerate of others.

Picture this, you spend a great night out with your friends, drinking, smoke a few cones, whatever, it's 5am and in your drunken stupidity you actually believe you're not that drunk and can drive really well despite not being able to walk straight or talk without a slur. On the way home you collect another car before slamming into a stobie pole.

After 6 months of rehab you are still unable to wipe your own bum, clean your teeth, feed yourself, stand, walk, or have sex. It is unlikely you will ever do these things for yourself again.

If going to jail is all you get out of your drink driving, you got off light.

An interesting point of view.
Does this extend to other people who repeatedly show a complete disregard for other people's safety too (so not neccesarily driving drunk)?

Why wouldn't it? If this point of view were not the same as societies (in general) then drink drivers would never be sent to jail.

Even if drink drivers only ever hurt themselves they would still be inflicting their stupidity on someone else, usually the ambo's, Dr's and nurses etc who have to clean up the mess.

I'm not saying don't drink or do drugs or whatever it is that floats your boat, I'm saying do it responsibly sparing a thought for the possible consequences.

Yes, but your argument, as you put it, can include other people who are detremental to the health of others.

Do you agree?

Actually, most of the state prisons in the US are privatized. The day to day running of the prison is done by a private company with government oversight. In the US the prison business is BOOMING.

To a certain extent. Like we shouldn't lock up pregnat women who continue to smoke during pregnancy, diabetics who don't manage their BSL's etc.

So are you saying we shouldn't send repeat drink drivers to jail? If some (repeat) drunk driver crashed into you and left you in a wheelchair would you want them to go unpunished?
