So help me out here, the FBI knew he was trouble but did nothing and he failed a background check to get a gun yet he got one anyway

What law would have stopped this since the laws should have stopped this?

I know, they need a law to make it against the law for people to violate the law when they break the law.

Yeah that’s the problem when your streets are swamped with ‘legal’ guns, anyone can get one, am I wrong in thinking it’s possible to get a gun without a background check. So the FBI had 15 minutes to track the guy down and even if they had wouldn’t they have done just what the cop who got shot did, or are you suggesting he should have been shot on sight for making a rambling mental health orientated phone call to the FBI.

I just want the magic law to prevent this.

So if I read you correctly, the US would have to outlaw all guns, correct?

@Duchess64
Don't get bogged down in pettiness when you have much more to offer. :-)

whodey: What law would have stopped this

A law requiring background checks on "private sales" like the one passed by the House of Representatives earlier this year:

"The 36-year-old instead exploited a loophole in federal gun regulations by buying the AR-style weapon in a private sale, multiple law enforcement sources told ABC and the Wall Street Journal.

Private firearm sellers are not required to run background checks or even ask potential buyers if they are permitted to own weapons."

"The legislation mandates background checks be performed on all gun sales, including firearm purchases made privately, whether it be online or at gun shows. Under current law, only licensed gun dealers are required to conduct a background check for someone seeking to obtain a gun."
