Pat Robertson: “If you fight science, you are going to lose your children”

The most recent Gallup poll found that 46 percent of Americans believe Earth is less than 10,000 years old, and that humans were created in that time. Science does not have all the answers about precisely how life came to be on this planet, but we can definitively state the Earth is far older than 10,000 years, and is in fact 4.5 billion years old.

The issue recently became news because Marco Rubio said that he didn’t know how old the Earth was, and wasn’t sure if the scientists were right. Good grief. Sinclair Oil‘s logo is a dinosaur for goodness’ sake. It baffles me how someone can fill their tank with gasoline but have no concept of how old the Earth is, or the chemical processes that were necessary to make petroleum happen. Enter Pat Robertson, who appears to have become the voice of reason. According to CNN, here’s what he said in response to a question Robertson fielded Tuesday from a viewer on his Christian Broadcasting Network show “The 700 Club.”

[i]“You go back in time, you’ve got radiocarbon dating. You got all these things, and you’ve got the carcasses of dinosaurs frozen in time out in the Dakotas,” Robertson said. “They’re out there. So, there was a time when these giant reptiles were on the Earth, and it was before the time of the Bible. So, don’t try and cover it up and make like everything was 6,000 years. That’s not the Bible.” Before answering the question, Robertson acknowledged the statement was controversial by saying, “I know that people will probably try to lynch me when I say this.”

“If you fight science, you are going to lose your children, and I believe in telling them the way it was,” Robertson concluded.[i]

It will be interesting to see what kind of discussion this sparks within the religious community that does not accept evolution nor the scientific view that the Earth is billions of years old. And Robertson is exactly right. Plenty of adults feel that it’s fine to go toe to toe with scientists when their beliefs contradict with the scientific facts. Their children are not so likely to feel the same. This is an important moment for religion and science, I believe. There’s plenty of common ground between science and religion. Perhaps now is the time to find it

Old Earth Creationists have been around for a long time, and I'm one of them. Granted, they are not as much fun to talk about for you lefty atheists.

In general, I agree with Robertsons quote.

You are definitely a minority amoung evangelicals and Republicans.

A vast majority of evangelicals and a majority of Republicans believe the Earth has been here only 6000 years.

First of all, I'm not a Republican. Secondly, I could care less how many of "me" there are.

However, you hate the GOP, so coming up with numbers showing that the vast number of them think the earth is only 6000 years old I suppose would be beneficial to your cause.

Who knows, maybe you can find some that think God wants women to be raped while your at it.

so you are telling me that by looking at a bunch of rocks, some nut says the earth is billions of years old. What a joke that is! Bet you believe in global warming too.
Since all atheists are liberals, when they end up in hell, their fat asses will be crispy fried, but it won't be from global warming, it will be from a different kind of warming.

Actually a little known fact is that the universe really does spin around the earth.

LOL.

I was referencing the fact that Galileo was demonized for stating that the universe does not spin around the earth. At that time the religious leaders felt that it threatened the validity of the Bible. Now we scoff at such a notion, but they were ready to burn him at the stake for his findings.

I happen to believe in the Big Bang, classical physics, science, quantum mechanics - the lot . And I also believe, just as fervently, that God called the universe into existence, using the Big Bang as His mechanism. I think the Creation story, if one accepts that a "day" not last today's 24-hour day, was the very best that wise men could do at the time Genesis was written, in trying to answer, "Where did I come from"?

I believe that physics are the rules God laid out for an orderly universe. Physics are the rules that God laid out in order for us to exist, over geologic time.

God and science are far from mutually exclusive. Physics are God's playbook. I find it disheartening that scientists should aspire to disprove God, and Theists would work so hard to peons the existence of God. For the former, this existence is empty; for the latter, they don't truly believe.

So you don't believe the bible was written by "God" through men?

If you do then aren't you saying that was the best God could do? How does Adam and Eve fit into the whole God created the Big Bang thing?

I see. Do you also still believe all of the following that you posted once?

I agree with you, I believe that there are many apocalyptic presences which are being inflicted upon us as a people, and a nation, and as a world. I've often felt that not being able to view the ultraviolet spectrum was God's punishment on us for original sin, because if we were pure of heart our limiltess love when we were close to God would enable us to see all wavelengths of light. There is so much we cannot see, there is an entire slive of the universe we cannot see, it is called dark matter, and God has forbidden us from seeing it because right now He hates us. Or hates what we do. I think that when Christ returns, the Constitution will be voted out of existence because Christ will speak before the Senate and tell us to do it so we will. I think your beginning to ask questions is very important, and here you have a worldwide audience, so you should go ahead and ask those questions before all the nations that are here on this site. Please tell me how your name works, because I too understand the signs and feel that you should reveal yourself to be who you are. Barcodes - yes barcodes are indeed the devil's mark, and I have shown by using reverse mathematics that of course, the earth is the center of the universe. Basically when you reverse mathematics, and divide, you have turned many equations upside down and in this form they are understandable to mean that the earth is the center of the universe. I have applied reverse mathematics to barcodes, and I have shown in several forms that the many possible universes have come together to equal just one universe where what is, is...barcodes are really just a different form of stripes anyway, markings like you would find on a zebra, or perhaps a referee, and it's led me to believe that zebras are God's chosen animals.

I have yet to hear a scientist try to disprove the existence of God, they may in the course of research discover facts that contradict a literal interpretation of the Bible, but as you pointed out that is not the same thing at all.

Do you often come across scientists aspiring to disprove God? Can you point me to some of their research?
