The third thread I’ve opened in a space of 10 minutes this morning had one poster spreading the same message:
“The forum is dead. I can’t argue. Blah blah
Blah. Leftist conspiracy. Etc. Ad infinitum.”
And I caught myself responding to it:
“Why do you think the likes of you are being banned? Because of your political opinions (if they’re not racist)? Or because you evangelicalise, off-topic and continually derail threads to spout your political agenda?”
But I stopped from posting. I realised that I, myself, by responding to the constant trolling am actually derailing the topic as well.
But I do find it offensively annoying that every single thread ends up with alt-right evangelicals trolling, baiting, spewing forth racist and paranoid conspiracy theories. Let alone the constant victimhood they feel they must share.
I am not for banning people. I don’t like blocking points of view. Hell, it’s not like their madhatter opinions aren’t sometimes amusing. But every single thread, over and over and over...
What is to be done? Just ignore them? Isn’t that just a puddle that will self-enlarge as they attract more of their kind (or the same person under more and more names)?
I dunno.
I just had to whine about it.
Thanks for listening.
@shavixmir
Putin’s poodles, sowing discord. Do not feed trolls. Repeat: do not feed trolls.

Hardly the norm, Shav.
Lately, there is a dearth of righties in here. Hey, it's summer. people go on vacation.
@shavixmir saidi wanted a way for each user to personally "ban" other users.

If you add a person to your ignore list, that person's posts are hidden for you and just for you. Let them shout at each other all they want. They would soon find themselves without an audience.
How much tidier would your forum be if you no longer see posts from whodey, eladar, earl, quacker, etc ? You wouldn't have to wade through tons of crap to see if something is worth discussing. And i am very comfortable with the risk that i might lose a great piece of wisdom at some point in the future that would change my life forever.
@earl-of-trumps saidOr maybe they've grown tired of being thrashed by facts.

Many plebian sleepers seem to be awakening. And that waking reality, fashioned by years of conservative lying, is almost a nightmare.
@zahlanzi saidWouldn’t we and they end up with our own personal echo chambers. It probably would lead to more constructive discussion on this forum but at what price?

It would be very complicated in terms of who gets ignored, I don’t think those who loosely identify as libs or lefties would ignore the same list of those who loosely identify as right wing.
I think someone’s already mentioned the tactic of starving the troll and this can be done at the thread title level. The obvious trolling threads could just be left to die on the vine if reasonable posters just choose to ignore them.
@zahlanzi saidI upvoted.

I support the right for people to make those sorts of choices. ^^
@earl-of-trumps saidThat’s fine but the duchess also raised some interesting questions in many of her threads and it was obvious that those who persistently clashed with her for page after page in repetitive ping pong debates were doing it for sport as much she was and neither were having a debate. Yes that will always be a popular pastime but it will never be part of a constructive debate and the thread is about how do we radically reduce the trolling if we cannot actually eliminate it.
@kevcvs57
By far, the most unpopular poster in here, Duchess64, was also the most
responded to poster in here.
People want to vent and you can't stop that
I take it you couldn’t think of a right wing troll to use as an example?

I have plenty i don't agree with no1marauder. I can debate him all i want. I can point out what is wrong with sh76's reaganomics. I just had a debate with shavixmir.
I don't need eladar's racism to find a new different opinion. I have had enough of average joes. I know damn well that whodey is incapable of saying anything without three or 4 lies mixed into it.
I can safely gamble that i am never going to get anything of value out of discussing anything with the likes of eladar. I am never going to watch some Ben Shapiro for a brand new outlook on life. I am never going to go on Breitbart or other obviously extreme right outlets.

My idea that nobody will care to ever put into code is purely personal. Everybody has the right to speak but nobody has the obligation to listen. If given the chance to make it easier to ignore Eladar, i would. You let me know if he shares the secret to eternal life or unlimited clean energy or a cake recipe that won't make you gain weight one day that i had missed because i am ignoring him.
"The obvious trolling threads could just be left to die on the vine if reasonable posters just choose to ignore them."
I am not talking just about those. I am talking about good threads that are derailed into a cesspool of lies and racism . I am talking about good debaters wasting time addressing those donkeys and not being able to advance the discussion anywhere.
@kevcvs57 saidDuchess64's anti-Western hatred was repetitive and "over-the-top". It deserved to be thwarted at every opportunity.

There's a case to be made in favor of reasonable debate; especially that which concerns Western culture and policy.
Duchess64 did not choose this reasonable path.
Not only did Duchess64 personally attack me for being white, male and American: She categorically condemned all of us and implicitly wished for us to be put to death.
She chose, unwisely.

@wolfe63 saidI don’t often disagree with you wolfe but us white westerners are big enough and ugly enough to withstand the tirades of a lone duchess. I find the baiting of minorities in the West by white westerners be to much more problematic.
