The Saudis have been relying on Americans for defense for decades. It is a touchy subject for sure. I think it's a good idea if done properly but an easy situation to screw up.

@mott-the-hoople saidNo but neither should Russia or China. A workable equilibrium between China and the US would be best for the world at large. Russia is just a spoiler state with nothing singling it out as a world power other than its nuclear arsenal, it has a comparatively tiny economy and mainly backward population and society. It shouldn’t really be mentioned in the same breath as the big two

Hamas ended that deal. Perhaps that was Hamas' main goal.
