interestingly, Liz Truss' start as PM was the first time that there were no white men in any of the UK's five most important positions.

- The PM was a woman
- Kwasi Kwarteng as Chancellor of the Exchequer, making him Britain’s first Black finance minister.
- Suella Braverman, who is of Indian heritage, was appointed home secretary
- James Cleverly, who identifies as mixed race, was assigned the role of top diplomat as foreign secretary.
And the Monarch was Queen Elizabeth.
Too bad such a historic period had to be so incredibly sullied by the Queen's death followed by the PM's resignation.
@sleepyguy saidConservatives aren't interested in non-white men being counted, I know.
That kind of race and gender bean counting could not be less interesting.
@vivify saidThis only goes to show that women and minorities can occupy positions of power while still pursuing a reactionary political agenda.

Basically, on September 7th 2022, the most progressive of those five people in positions of high authority was our 96-year-old Queen.
Celebrating the fact that Braverman or Kwarteng held high offices of state is like celebrating the fact that Clarence Thomas is on the Supreme Court. And the fact that Liz Truss happened to be a woman doesn't alter the fact that she is likely to go down as the worst PM since Chamberlain.
@sleepyguy saidWho said leaders must be picked based on race or gender? I'm simply pointing out that this is progress.
That's just your own bigotry shining through. Ticking those boxes is pointless. How about finding competent leaders regardless of race or gender? Who do you think will take Liz's place?
Since only white men were seen fit to be European leaders for at least a millennia, non-white men at the top is quite noteworthy. It's a marker of how much the UK has moved away from racism and sexism.
This kind of progress should be applauded, especially since racism is still a problem...which is why Harry and Meghan abandoned their royal status.
@vivify saidBiden made it clear from day one with his appointments that he would only pick black and woman. That is what progress, pray tell? What is this obsession with women and color? Isn’t that long ago now. Myself, I hire based. on smarts, talent and merit. I truly don’t care what people look like. Exception being about tattoos, but I digress.

@vivify saidProgress toward ... what? A future in which judgement based on race or gender gives way to judgement on content of character and merit? Conservatives are way ahead of you race obsessed lefties. Quit dragging your knuckles and catch up already.
This kind of progress should be applauded

The best thing that can be said about Truss is that she at least didn’t fukk a dead pig’s head.
But, hey, that’s British politics for you.
@sleepyguy saidToward world leaders not being not being limited to one race or gender.
Progress toward ... what?
