My mom supports my stepfather and I'm single, independent, etc. 30% of all households today the woman outearns the man. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2294/is_2003_April/ai_101174060.
Given most studies show that women earning power tends to be downplayed and men's refusal to help out around the house, I think men are just insecure and using a "I am man, here me roar." statement to avoid work. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2294/is_2003_April/ai_101174060

Oh, ya, and don't forget that this statistic leaves out all the high earning women who are not married.

Maternity leave shouldn't happen often - and shouldn't effect employment. Although you guys are sure to argue that it does.
I'm sketchy of those statistics that say men get payed more than women for the same jobs, I actually don't believe them anymore, when I'm more motivated I may just look up these stats.
And oh yeah, don't forget, that still means that 70% of men are the main source of income for a house. That's actually not really good for men - second class citizenship can have some bonuses.
Originally posted by cmsMasterI was pointing out that this statistic is not a very broad one, and in fact excludes many men as well as women.

Maternity leave must happen every time a woman has a child. Do you expect her to go to work on the day she gives birth? How about the day before, when she could go into labour at any time? Or the day after, when she has just gone through hours of labour and is probably exhausted? Of course having to take time off to have children will affect your employment prospects.
The statistic is that 70% of married men earn more than their spouses. So if I earn $60,000 and my husband earns $70,000, we would fall into this catagory. This hardly makes him the main source of income for the house. But let's say, for arguements sake, the I am a housewife. How exactly does this make me a second class citizen?

Originally posted by cmsMasterI agree that there is a wage discrepancy in many professions, and in some professions women are definitely treated as second class. In the professions where this is true, it is very wrong and part of the reason why equal opportunity employment was instituted. In the case of salary discrepancies between men and women within a profession, however, it is definitely the men determining the salaries who want women to remain second class, as opposed to the women themselves. This, however, has nothing to do with being a housewife.
