These are people who think they are normal, who think that they are a shining example of what normal is, that they are God's (or Trump's) gift to the world.
You're kind of right, ignoring the fools did kind of work for awhile, keeping them out of positions of authority (Trump talked about running three different times) until he realized that America was finally ripe for the picking because it was stuffed to the gills with arrogant, stupid people like him). But he's here now, and they now think they were right all along. This is how democracy dies. At least in America. We have no guardrails against this yet, even now after seeing the damage firsthand.

I don't know the answer or the right balance.
Just in the past few years it surprised me to see I was making the same kind of cynical jokes that an Eastern European might make, of a type I had not made previously.
