CDC director says a 2nd wave of coronavirus in the winter could hit the US harder than the current outbreak

Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said a second wave of infections is “inevitable.”

The bottom line folks is the world is simply going to have to find a different way of operating. i.e more people working from home, more e-commerce, more space between front line employees, more (and better quality) testing etc. This is going to be painful and difficult, but COVID-19 is not going to adapt to the world, it's going to be the other way around. So, buckle up, buttercups, we've not seen the half of this yet!

Your knowledge of advanced mathematics does you credit. So, you were a math teacher?

I'm not sure second wave necessarily means the end of the first. It just means a second increase of daily numbers , not a total re-emergence after complete cessation.

Time will tell if the experts who claim this is a seasonal virus. A month should tell, definitely in two.

Oh, how warming and optimistic!

I bet they didn't even talk this way during the polio scourge. (1937 to peak 1955)

A second wave being worse than this one is extremely unlikely.

First, this one DID hit during flu season (Feb/March is flu season)

Second, we didn't socially distance at ALL when the wave was building in February and early March. It will not catch us by surprise again. We will be at some level of social distancing from the outset next time and will be able to increase that at a moment's notice.

Third, we will have much, much, much more testing. Whether it will be enough is a different issue, but we'll have orders of magnitude more than we had in February and March.

Fourth, we will have some therapeutics. I'm not saying we'll have a vaccine or a silver bullet (though we might), but we'll have a much better idea of which treatments work (see today's Remdesivir trial preliminary result) and which treatments are useless (such as the much discussed ventilator).

Predicting a second wave worse than the first is scaremongering.

Try speaking the truth and I'll let you know.

Here's a sneak preview: NO, I like the truth

In the second wave, you have a smaller population of people that can catch the virus. So I don't see how the 2nd wave can be as bad as the first wave.

Also, in the 2nd wave, people will be far better prepared, hospitals will be better prepared, and who knows - the 2nd wave may be totally blunted by a vaccine or perhaps just some elixir that holds the symptoms in check better.

Can't see it. My opinion.

2nd wave does not mean the end of 1st, I think it is a increase of the flat curve

Sh76 - You're a lawyer, and though I value your legal opinions, you're a bit out of your element here. Arguing medical issues with doctors, is a bit like arguing the structural integrity buildings with experienced architects and engineers. If doctors are predicting a 2nd wave being worse than the 1st, I'd take them seriously if I were you. 🙂

Wait a bloody minute... first it was half-way April, then May... now you’re saying the Summer weather won’t kill off the virus until July???

Didn’t I read you say that the virus had already peaked in mid April?

Mhmmmm...
