@mchill - said "... perhaps it's time to stop lying to ourselves about how much the super-rich pay in taxes, start closing the multitude of tax loopholes the rich have taken advantage of... "
I have been saying in here for a long while, those loopholes in the law that you speak of
are not going to be closed any too soon. I think they are of deliberate design ...[text shortened]... eitbart.com/tech/2022/02/14/tesla-to-pay-0-in-federal-tax-despite-record-5-5-billion-profit-in-2021/

That really sums up the paradox which is America: they put tourists into space, but they can't take care of the homeless sick and injured.
If there's no profit to be made and the only treasure that which you can store up in heaven, suddenly the fat cats aren't interested.
@averagejoe1 saidPeople are infiltrating the homeless community?
Govt should, and could, have one program, supporting the truly desperate. Abut 40 million people, not including the many illegals. And not the losers who infiltrate the real homeless street people.
Everyone else, get a job and (ouch) support themselves.
What do you mean? Beverly Hills’ princesses are, instead of getting a nose job, chiqueing down to live as tramps?
Folk in Chicago have opted to give up a heated apartment for the luxioury of Winter under a subway bridge?

He thinks that "people who are too lazy to work" are somehow pretending to be homeless people. Some homeless people do like the freedom of not being reliant on the government just because they have no money, yes, some homeless are like this. Most, however, are forced into that situation through no fault of their own. A LOT of Americans are a few paychecks away from having their mortgages called due by the banks and with no place else to go, could find themselves homeless. These are the "have-nots", also called "the working poor". Most keep their heads barely above water for decades, until catastrophe strikes and they find themselves on the streets.
Somewhere out there on that horizon
Out beyond the neon lights
I know there must be somethin' better
but there's nowhere else in sight
It's survival in the city
When you live from day to day
City streets don't have much pity
When you're down, that's where you'll stay
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city
I was born here in the city
With my back against the wall
Nothing grows, and life ain't very pretty
No one's there to catch you when you fall
Somewhere out on that horizon
Faraway from the neon sky
I know there must be somethin' better
And I can't stay another night
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city
