"A ruling by Brazil's supreme court has boosted the efforts of the country's disadvantaged indigenous groups to keep control of their lands.

By 10 votes to one, judges ruled to maintain an Indian reservation in the northern border state of Roraima as a single, continuous territory."

"Our correspondent notes that the case has raised fears in military circles that it would create an effectively autonomous Indian reservation running along a lengthy section of Brazil's border."

Ok, so why is the government doing this?

It took a long time to establish settlements in the forests, and now they're just giving it all away!
Soon we'll have Indians wanting independence from the Federal government, this should be avoided.
These indians should see themselves as Brazilians first, and it is obvious that the lands in the reservations are going to waste.

I think this rule by the supreme court is a big mistake.

Ok, so why is the government doing this?
Because stuff happens in democracies. People choose. Elected officials are mandated. Things change.

Are you saying that Brazil's supreme court is part of the "government" of Brazil?

So what is the Indian problem? Even if they would want independence, their spears aren't really going to threaten the Brazilian government, now are they?

White men invaders? The farmers who were living in those areas came in all colors, your idea that this is something based on race is totally false.

"little nazi friend?" Why don't you grow up before posting here?

Who lived there since who knows when and got gunned from their lands?

I suggest you read Florinda Donner's - Shabono first and if you then still come up with the same conclusions, you are beyond repair.

the guy is only 12 and is mentally retarded so go easy on him, it's not his fault.

personally i think the land should go to whoever will look after it best. brazil has a bad reputation for illegal logging, mining and pretty much everything that gos to make a profit.

Im not saying we should extreminate the indians, what Im saying is that it is dangerous to encourage a sort of independence from the rest of Brazil.

I agree with your first statement.
That's exactly why I think you shouldn't just give all the land for a reservation, personally I believe in integration and that the system of reservations is both inefficient and would also create a feeling of separatism, but besides that, I think it would be harder to make sure illegal loggings and other illegal activities are stopped if you forbid non-indians to have access to those areas.

Mmm. So let me see. You believe in freedom and democracy, presumably? But YOU want to decide where the inigenous people live; you want to integrate them regardless of what they may or may not want; inefficiency is not permissable in your version of freedom and democracy; you contend that ownership should be linked to capacity to derive maximum economic benefit from property and not to more conventional concepts of property rights; all Brazillians must be on the same page - the only page permitted - when it comes to patriotic/separatist sentiments; and to top it all, in your final 27 words here, you appear to be blaming indiginous forest tribes for the industrial scale illegal logging; so, non-Indians must have access to Indian lands - not only for 'freedom's' sake - but also so that the forests are safe.

These things are what your own words seem to be saying.
