"A ruling by Brazil's supreme court has boosted the efforts of the country's disadvantaged indigenous groups to keep control of their lands.

By 10 votes to one, judges ruled to maintain an Indian reservation in the northern border state of Roraima as a single, continuous territory."

The situation in Brazil is very different from that in Israel, or America.

For example, we didn't have a racist manifest destiny policy towards other people in the country.

"He is not hateful"?

What about his peaceful quotes like "Bill O'Reilly is a piece of crap. The only thing of his I'd like to read is an obituary", or "You can't make an omelet without a few broken eggs." (when talking about the shootings of innocent people). Or maybe "I am in favor of terrorism in N.Ireland".
Hmm, it does look a bit hateful doesn't it?

not in your league of hate anyway.

So you're saying there are leagues of hate?
Or that I am hateful?

Have you looked in the mirror recently?

Ok, so why is the government doing this?

It took a long time to establish settlements in the forests, and now they're just giving it all away!
Soon we'll have Indians wanting independence from the Federal government, this should be avoided.
These indians should see themselves as Brazilians first, and it is obvious that the lands in the reservations are going to waste.

I think this rule by the supreme court is a big mistake.
Come on, general. The Indians are fighting for survival; they need a break. And the settlements -- are they really so valuable? Short-term gain, long-term forest extinction. I doubt it's in the Indians' best interests to secede from Brazil -- on the contrary, they stand to gain much since their quasi-autonomous territories will require state aid to function. And who knows, they might just make good forest managers. Such is my remote armchair take on the situation.

The most revealing sentence you wrote is 'the lands in the reservations are going to waste'. Disagreement on the assumptions that it's based on probably constitute the core of ecopolitics.

If that's true, Brazil is also very different from Argentina.

It is indeed quite different from Argentina.

see this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conquest_of_the_Desert

Quote from the link: "At the end of 1878 he started the first wave to "clean" the area between the Alsina trench and the Río Negro River by continuous and systematic attacks to the aboriginals' settlements."

What about the "Bugreiros"?

These were isolated cases in the Brazilian south.

My point is that there wasn't a federal government official policy to exterminate the Indians, or any other racial group in the country.

I'd rather not speculate how you get yourself to sleep.

On a good day, you're fairly articulate and give the impression of being quite a decent person. Today I get the impression of an aggressive slurring homophobic drunk. Well, we all have our bad days.

Which claim -- that you normally seem decent or that you're being boorish today? Both stem from your posts, of course.

My day's on the sunny side, for what's it worth.
