As we take a look at the political situation in the United States, the so called Evangelicals, a certain branch of what is widely known as Christianity, seem to gain more and more ground.
In this thread I want to invite everybody to give reasons why this brand of Christianity is so much on the rise in American society. What are the material and/or non-material conditions that make such a rise possible ?

God is taking back America out of Satans control.
God's Grace rules over the power of sin.
About 1,300 people came to know the Lord at an L.A. Gospel Preaching this weekend.

service to all in need, a life of sacrifice and altruism with no visible,
tangible benefit.
Evangelicals pervert this message. They say, 'Just say Jesus is Lord,'
and you will be saved.
Not only that, others (the infidel heathens) will not be saved (a little
schadenfreude to tantalize the senses).
Which do you think people will gravitate to? The hard life or the easy
one?

Are these the reasons why the Evangelicals are on the rise ? Because it is an "easy" ideology ?

your other question in the other thread.
Look: all you have to do is say, 'Jesus is Lord,' then sing a few touchy-
feely hymns, then persecute some homosexuals.
Heaven is guaranteed. Once Saved, Always Saved!

Oops, I'm not sure serious evangelical people would agree with your crisp description of their faith ....
What I'm interested in is to what extent the rise of evangelism is a reaction to certain social and political developments in American society.

in 19th century Germany. People started saying, 'What does it
'really' mean when Jesus said...,' and 'How did 1st century Jews
understand things differently than we do...'
Some people didn't like the intellectualization of their religion,
so they reacted.
Of course, evangelicals wouldn't agree with me. But then again,
they think that you, as a Roman Catholic, are going to hell because
you haven't been 'born again.' I'm sure Jesus would be proud.

I know, but it doesn't bother me at all. Anyway how do they know I wasn't born again in a biblical sense ?
Aren't people afraid of the political energy this movement is able to channel in such a way they are even very influential on the government level ?
Originally posted by ivanhoeThe Nazis had a lot of "political energy" in 1920's Germany and their political ideology: extreme nationalism, intolerance and glorification of war are all very similar to the American right-wing fundamentalists like Falwell, Robertson, etc. It's easy to convince people that God's on their side and all the trouble in the world is caused by those "others" who don't share your beliefs and value systems. American fundamentalism is the other side of the coin from Islamic fundamentalism; they just read a different old book.

Originally posted by ivanhoeOne theory is that a politician (mayor?) in San Francisco swung the election due to his gung-ho action on same-sex union. Evangelicals who might not have voted in this election got to the polls to vote against Kerry, on the basis that Kerry would be more amenable to such unions.

So you could say that Bush was re-elected because the homosexual lobby is trying to ram their agenda down our throats.
