Dan Blather's phony National Guard 'memo' story (to cite one example), aired shortly before the 2004 election, was not in any way an attempt to be accurate. It was an attempt to sway an election.
I realize that this story didn't air 'before Fox came about, but jeez... Dan still hasn't admitted that the 'memos' were forged.
The story of a 30 year old DUI (G.W. Bush) which came out the Friday before the 2000 election? Nah, no bias there at all... I'm sure the network news executives all decided to have some intern research the traffic tickets in Kennebunkport over the previous 30 years, just to see if Wubya was ever pulled over for any reason...

Ever hear of CNN? NBC? ABC? CBS? MSNBC? Good Morning America? The Today Show? Katie Couric doing the CBS evening news? Gee, tough to tell who SHE voted for in the last election...just like her predecessor, Dan Rather... gosh, I have no idea what HIS political affiliation is...

Can't access them all - not living in America and all.
OK - if there is a story containing anything critical of bush or America, do you dismiss it out of hand as 'liberal/anti-American garbage', or read it with an open mind to see whether or not there might be some truth to the story?
Personally, I feel that a lot of American media no longer reports i ...[text shortened]... gurgitate talking points in a heavily partisan setting - overwhelmingly slanted to the right.
don't forget Newsweek ... they've got George Will in there for conservative flavor, once every other issue, otherwise you're stuck with Anna Quindlen, Jonathan Alter, et al.
the idea used to be that the top journalism schools were very liberal, thus the liberal bias in the news media. this was before Fox News.
i don't watch TV news and don't read the papers much anymore ... so don't have any idea about the current crop, including Fox ... just what's in Newsweek, or on Yahoo news sometimes ...
do you mean excluding the talk shows, i.e., the supposedly pure news clips, or including the talk shows? i'd exclude them. they're supposed to be biased.
well to find out what kind os progress the US has made in iraq (if any)
i switch to fox and to see how many casualties we sustained i have to
look for something else. Not that that fox doesn't report how many people were killed by car bombs they just dont give it the air time it deserves same for the other news organisations with the pros going on in iraq, no matter how little positive change you see in iraq.

How many people out there honestly believe that mainstream American media has a liberal bias?
Rarely though do you find "smoking guns" in the sense that one isolated story is unmistakably liberally biased. Individual almost all are plausibly the result of whatever the opinion happens to be. Occassionally there will be one, such as the memo-gate. CBS still hasn't admitted the memos were fake.
Some say the font existed in the 1970s, but with 300 million people in the US, 100 million of whom would love to see GWBush humiliated, you figure someone could produce a name of an actual typewriter that could produce the Dan Rather Memo in the 1970s.
Also, do a google search on "Dowdification". It shows just how far the NY Times opinion writers will go to make GWBush look bad.
I read a lot of news, including the NY Times. It is hard to imagine the old Soviet Union having papers that warped reality to match their world view to such an extent as the NY Times.

I do.

Again, take out the editorial pages and you have the best international news coverage available to Americans. By best, I mean factual, researched, topical, and at least trying to be relevant.
Unless you have some alternatives to suggest? (No, I've never worked for the Times.)
Originally posted by techsouthNaturally, you ignore the conservative side of the New York Times. Most of the sources that people in the US call "left-wing", are thought to be conservative by most countries out of the US. What about the fact that most of the vocabulary used in debates by both American conservatives AND liberals has a right-wing biast (i.e. the redifinition of patriotism).
I do.

Honestly, I do.
btw most of the Fox "reporting" is a joke also.
I find it difficult to find the facts in any news report these days.
The local rag is a perfect example of liberal bias.
The vast majority of the "reporting" has a distasteful liberal taint and the editorial page is so far to the left it's almost over the edge.
Sure would be nice if there was one media outlet that would just give me the facts and let me form my own opinions.
Drats, now you've got me goin'!
