Hello everyone.
I know this has been out a while, but I just watched it with 51 Generation Z teenagers. After it was over, there was quite a discussion. It remained civil, and several of the teenagers decided to completely remove all their social media accounts. Others proclaimed they will never read the "news" the same way.
For an experiment, I asked those who held strong conservative views and those who held strong liberal views to simply Google "climate change is..." Those with strong conservative views quickly came up with loads of links to support their already preconceived notions, while the ones holding strong liberal views quickly came up with totally different links to support their own views.
There are some really alarming trends in social networking with the growth and development of artificial intelligence.

@liljo saidI myself do not pretend to know anything scientifically about climate change. So I read pros and cons. Given what I read,, the earths climate has always warm and cold. Also humans are a small part of the universe, and not likely to affect this planet.

CO2 Is so saturated in earths atmosphere get more CO2, man-made or natural, will have little impact on the climate. Also, the fluctuation in the suns heat is what changes our climate, not human activity.. Also, the rate of global warming has slowed over the last decade even though CO2 continues to increase. I think that is very telling. Further, Sea levels have been rising for thousands of years and the increase has nothing to do with humans.
Further, many fears are based on predictions and inadequate or flawed computer climate models. That too, should tell us something ….glaciers have been doing what they do for thousands of years.
Those who think people are responsible for saying a lot of things with no basis.
@liljo saidAI and search engines lead to re-inforcement bias. It's a known phenomenon. See, for example:

@averagejoe1 saidWhether man-made or not, all of our infrastructure was built for the current climate we have. See: Texas last winter. It does change over time, but we have a huge financial investment in keeping it as consistent as possible over time. I'm not an expert either, but the vast majority of climate scientists say that one way to maintain our current climate is to reduce carbon emissions. That's good enough for me.

Of course other ideas for climate stabilization also exist. But it can't be discussed amongst conservatives because they believe we can't do anything about it. Trillions of dollars in infrastructure are at stake.
@wildgrass saidOK. How about this. One expert says that theoretically, if the USA totally stops carbon emission, that it would have no effect on the climate, the global warming. You see, the emissions of China, et al, are so tremendous that our emissions amount to a drop in the bucket compared to China.

So, if we do it right, and they don't, we will lose in the race for being the best country for just about everything we are good at. We will not be able to produce, for instance, but boy, they will.
They will burn all the energy in sight. And, we will have to BUY from them, because our production will be diminished.
@averagejoe1 saidThat's like arguing that just because your neighbor is poisoning his well, you should poison yours, too.

There is a sensible option: develop clean and renewable energy sources and re-calibrate the infrastructure to run on it, thereby creating new jobs independent of China, instead of remaining beholden to dirty energy sources. What the Chinese do is their business; the West need not follow the Chinese in a head-long rush to a washed out bridge.

Here is a question for you. Why are those of you who are arguing about Climate change doing so? This thread isn't about Climate Change. This thread is about Social Media...Climate Change was an example.
It just goes to show that you are already programmed by social media. And you don't even know it.
@joc44 saidThis online forum is social media.

On facebook, for example, people are asked questions like: Peter Doolidge = PEGE, what would your name be?
And that seems like innocent fun (although fun is a very loose description). When you reply to it, quite soon another vague site asks you: how old were you when star was was released?
And the more you answer, the more your friends answer and the more these vague sites keep asking you silly questions.
It is data-mining. And people don’t see the connection between answering innocent, albeit silly, questions. Each time revealing a bit more information about themselves.
I was looking up expensive rain gear for a story I was writing. On my phone in another location than home.
That evening I am at home, scrolling through facebook on my computer… and lo and behold! What advertisements were popping up? For that expensive rain gear I has been googling earlier.
My wife is a peace loving hippie, my kid is into anime and I only really watch recipes being made and left-wing comedy on youtube.
If we, on our respective devices google: climate change is…
Then all three of us get completely different sites to choose from. And all three get advertisements for very expensive wellies and rain coats.

The way I read the latest reports, there is nothing we can do to maintain our current climate; we can only slowly reduce the amount of warming for decades down the road; but more warming seems inevitable no matter what we do, if the IPCC report is accurate.
Very tough to figure out how to message this. Middle aged adults are, in essence, being asked to make sacrifices for an era that they won't live (or will barely live) to see.
In a society where instant gratification is being sold as everything, I can see why this messaging doesn't sell very well.
