@mchill - I think you would agree that most soldiers are willing to die fighting for their country.

Also, on a peroneal level, one may want to risk his life and go to work to get food money for his family.

It's all about "risk management".

@Duchess64

There you have it. A soldier must be willing to surrender for his country.

Dying is pro freedom. Dying to preserve freedom and this nation is not something new.

Of course it may be something you never believed applied to you.
So you'll step up and die then ?

- living.

This from Texas Republican Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Patrick who suggested in an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson that he and other senior citizens might be willing to die in order to save the U.S. economy.

Can someone please explain to me how this fits in with the Republicans' "pro life" platform?

I started a thread a while back about how for every 1% of unemployment there are so many hundreds of thousands of death from such things as suicide, heart disease, alcoholism, etc. So a 10% increase in unemployment, which is probably a conservative estimate now, could cause close to half a million dead in a year.

I'm sorry, how many have died from Covid so far?

He would only fight and die for an abortion on demand or illegals coming across the border.

That is how they think now.

I don't know if you know this, but old people have lived most of their life - however short and fleeting that time period is. In relatively no time at all they will be gone from the machine anyhow. I suspect they would much rather cut it short than have their progeny suffer in destitution and poverty for what could be a relatively long time. Its called altruism. Its a na ...[text shortened]... g a baby for your own good is exactly the opposite. A baby cant be aborted for the babies own good.
So this is the latest manifestation of Ayn Rand's thing about altruism being incompatible with the requirements of human life?

People should be allowed to do what they wish. Educate them then let them decide.
Do I get to go 80 MPH in a 25 MPH zone?

It is truly remarkable to hear the level of hysterical nonsense coming out of right wingers now. A little more than a month ago we supposedly had the greatest and strongest economy ever; now a public health emergency has left us with no future at all unless we are willing to immediately sacrifice hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of our neighbors, family members and loved ones.

Jesus, stop the BS.

Each time you get in a car you can kill a person no matter if you drive 25 or 85.

If we put into practice what the government is doing today, driving your car must become illegal. Only essential driving is allowed to save lives. What is essential? Your government will tell you. If you are not essential and a neighbor sees you drive then your neighbor needs to call and turn you in.

If you are not essential, you can take public transit.

You have nothing but half truths.

The medical emergency was the excuse to create 22 million unemployed, shrinking our GDP by 20 percent.

It was not the virus that did this, it was the expansion of government that did this.

That is the right wing fairy tale. In truth, the economy was going to contract sharply because people aren't idiots and will not conduct themselves in a normal manner when there is a deadly epidemic going on. We saw that before any governmental measures were adopted in the airline, hotel and other industries.

The fact is your stupid idea to kill hundreds of thousands or more Americans by letting this pandemic spread unimpeded would cause far more lasting economic harm than the short, sharp slowdown required to bring the virus under control. The only purpose of your mad plan and the propaganda offensive behind it (which isn't working; a strong majority of Americans reject such crazy ideas) is to help the political fortunes of the Republican party.

Sure you can, but societal regulations reduce the danger to others by banning reckless behavior which could cause them harm.

That is exactly the same thing mandatory social distancing measures in the midst of an infectious epidemic do.
