Earlier in the show on Bill Maher, he had the author of the "they tell me this is how the world ends" book. I read that book last year. It's about cyberwarfare and how our national defense and intelligence operations are not prioritizing the real threats to our infrastructure and security that they should be. Foreign governments have the capability of seizing control of our power grid. There's no security funding to support businesses and lobbyists are getting in the way of meaningful action.

Why aren't more people worried about this? Ukraine is one thing, but does anyone really think we need really expensive airplanes to protect us against Russia? Psssh. We could slap them down with 1960s tech. Nope, they're coming for our infrastructure through the inter-webs, and no one cares.

I spent most of the 70's and 80's worried about this during the cold war, and with good reason. Though the possibility is there, I think the odds are against the world ending.

Not saying "worried about the world ending". THat's the name of the book.

Why aren't more people worried about cybersecurity? We inject enormous capital into hard target fortifications with physical military force when the bad guys just sneak in through the ethernet cable? Seems weird.

Cyber security is a major issue in the EU.
Not only on the privacy side of the fence (like we’re not allowed to proces personal data on US based servers), but also on the infrastructure and defense sides as well.
Even local councils use an implementation check system, to set the measures required for cyber safety (along the lines of integrity, personal data and sensitivity).

However, the world won’t end in a bang. It’ll be a slow decay with people realising too late that there’s no way back, and civilization will die with a whimper.

Seriously you just encapsulated the problem that wildgrass is highlighting.
The US and Israelis have already destroyed nuclear fuel centrifuges in Iran using cyber. Tell me what is there to stop an enemy state from shutting down the cooling system for any number of nuclear power stations in the US?

We have a problem, if intelligence communities will rather try to exploit weakness in cyber secrity than to report them and make the world a safer place for everybody...

Why would lobbyists get in the way of cyber security?

I was trying to dig up the interview transcript because this author explained it better than I can.

Basically, there have been several federal proposals to beef up cybersecurity at everything from utility companies and food processing companies to grocery stores and hospitals. But they are all private companies. Upgrades cost a lot of money and implementation includes active monitoring (i.e. hiring full time employees) and additional hoops to jump through to remain in compliance. Companies don't want to have to spend their own money on this, and, unless military priorities shift Congress doesn't have the money, so the business lobby shuts it down.

A major exception is banks. They invest a ton of money in this, because they know how critical it is for their clients.

For hospitals, who get hacked with ransomware all the time, it's cheaper at this stage to just pay the ransom to get their data back. Utility companies don't care (see: Texas).

Most hacks go unnoticed because companies pay ransomware without telling anyone. But at some point they can come after us with more than ransomware that shuts down gas pipelines for a few days.

Wrong answer. In the US, the people in charge change a lot but the problem persists. Here's three presidents worth of examples...

@wildgrass
Russian warships conducted military exercises near Ireland and Scotland and were probing for the trans atlantic cable connecting financial institutions in the US and Europe which, if cut would cause our economies to crash.

When we Irish shamed them to move elsewhere, they already had achieved their goal, the precise location of those cables.

I hope our navy and the EU navy and figured that one out and taking steps to hide those cables or have secret backups.

Metal head would be dancing in the streets if Putin pulled that one off.
