I think my grandfather was a patriot rather than a nationalist, and I think his inclinations were always towards social democracy (having naturalised as a Briton, he voted Labour for the rest of his life). But no doubt, had he not been Jewish, he would stayed in Germany and made the same uneasy compromises other people did. I'm sure my grandmother would have done the same, had she not been in love with a Jew. Having been fired for being engaged to a person of the wrong race, she was, however, brave enough to stay behind in Germany after my grandfather left for Britain in order to sue her boss for wrongful dismissal!

However, my personal history is perhaps irrelevant to the question of whether countries with an immigrant population should pursue a policy of multiculturalism, or should take steps to encourage assimilation, which was the question I previously posed.
