The post that was quoted here has been removedThings work well in Finland. The economy has also recovered in the last few years; it was known as the sick man of Europe for a while.
I think it's down to personal preference. For many, Finland is a problem-free paradise with sauna, forests, lakes and good technology. But I know that after the novelty wore off, I would find it cold, dark, boring, sterile, topographically and florally uniform, homogeneous, and terribly depressing, especially in winter. There's also too much vodka and that awful ammonia liquorice that gives you a headache. It lacks the rich culture and history of some other European countries, even if they have more problems, although it doesn't have the appalling record of some European countries that makes me struggle with them. If one wants a Finland-esque country in terms of climate and social structure, then Canada comes to mind; dare I say it's more beautiful, more varied in terms of landscape, and doesn't have the problem of homogeneity.
I like living in a country with imperfections. Growing up in a troubled society with all sorts of people and languages, trying to heal the wounds of history means that almost everyone has grit and character that I imagine many Finns lack. Everyone here has a story to tell.
When I am am able, I am going to live in Mexico, which is far from being perfect. But it's beautiful in so many other ways. And I always relish a chance to solve problems!
@cheesemaster saidmove to Djibouti where you would be the highest ranked chess player
Canada? Don't mention Canada!
We have enough immigrants as it is.
you would be treated like a king
I was for a couple of years
I was forced to leave the country after a Barry Manilow concert which I promoted was cancelled leading to riots and loss of life
As far as bleak and uninviting goes, Finland is as North of the wall as anything North of civilization goes.
Their food is horrendous, their language is... well... buggered as far as I can tell... and even the other Scandanavian countries can’t point the bloody place out on a map.
It’s like Northern Russia, but darker, colder and less civilized.
All this being said, there is something (and truthfully, God only knows what... and I’m a bloody atheist...) that is beckoning me to the place. Finland calls to me like a mermaid calls to a sailor. And I can’t for the life of me think what or why.
To be quite honest, I’m a Black Forest (Germany), Alps and Cote d’Azure type of guy.
I love driving around the Provance with my windows open, eating at Chez whatevers, drinking a wine as I look out over an Alpine lake and driving through Nice and Cannes, stopping for a Sea Bream lunch on the boulevard.
Why on Earth Finland... the Earthly equivelant of Mordor should call me is really terrifying.
Maybe I’ve got Sami blood and my genes are aching to eat reindeer intestines or something?
The post that was quoted here has been removedIn English you can refer to Finland as Scandinavian.
You are correct though that is is technically Nordic (although the North of Finland with the Sami do fall under ‘cultural Scandinavian’ ).
Doesn’t make it any better.
Oh. It’s worse than Denmark and Norway.
Yeah... come to Finland. Where Sweden and Russia collide. Oh the joy.

You always gotta jump in with both feet and play the "Gotcha" game and prove anything someone says is wrong, it's like a mental disease with you.
@dood111 saidThey (he/she) does seem to take the opposing view of whatever anybody says. I've always...ok, not really always because I rarely venture into this forum...wondered why.
