I've been wading through this thread, thinking of all the rebuttals I'd like to make to the right-wingers here who devoutly adore Trump, make excuses for him, twist his every glaring failure into some kind of success, and characterize even his threat to "end a civilization" as either no big deal or just desserts for almost 100 million Iranians, and I have to say: why bother? The right-wingers know full well Trump lies all the time, and they're fine with it. Dethrone truth, overthrow reality itself, and maybe, just maybe, all their wildest dreams will come true.
Words are not adequate to the times. Whatever MAGA thinks is wrong with the US or the world order, I cannot comprehend how millions of Americans, who live as kings compared to the vast majority of people in the world, can be so choked with hatred, bile, and rage as to cheer on what is happening around them, even at this late hour.
I look at the plants in my room. I think of my cats and my wife. There are the trees outside my window, swaying in the wind, and the songbird chirping somewhere out of view. The sky is blue, with just a few clouds scudding by. All is connected in some way, and have been since the dawn of time. There's still a world out there, and philosophical thoughts swirl in my mind. Occasionally something occurs to me I think worthy of writing down. That's it: perspective. There is no perspective anymore, and no objectivity, and that bodes ill for the future of civilization and humanity.
To this day I have no idea what MAGA really wants. I know what the Heritage Foundation wants, and the billionaire Silicon Valley accelerationists, and both have the ear of the Trump administration. One camp wants to turn the country into a church, the other a corporation. Neither prospect is good, and now all this suffering is being unleashed both at home and abroad. Needless suffering and wanton cruelty.
What is happening in the US is nothing short of a historic, cataclysmic disaster from which it will probably never truly recover. China could never, in its wildest dreams, have ever imagined that its chief rival would so completely destroy its own international credibility, and kneecap its own preeminence in science, technology, and industry. MAGA needs to pause and take stock of the situation as it now stands. They see victory everywhere, but in fact the US is in retreat on all fronts in all the ways that really matter. As with Russia, it will not be long (if current trends continue) before the only reason anyone pays any heed to the US is because it happens to have a large stash of nuclear weapons. As with Russia, the US will find that merely having a fearsome military is not enough to guarantee safety, liberty, or prosperity.
I wish I did not live in these times. Give me an inkwell and a candle, set me in an idyllic Italian village before the invention of electricity, and let me weave on parchment a world of peace, quiet, and honest inquiry. I want no part in whatever kind of world so-called American "conservatives" dream of these days. In fact, drop me off 25,000 years ago in a hunter-gatherer tribe in the African savanna, or wherever the weather is warm, and let me live among people that respect nature, and live in harmony with it under a wide sky jeweled with more stars than I could count.
