Human rights lawyers sue Trump administration for 'silencing' them

Prominent US human rights lawyers are suing the Trump administration over an executive order they say has gagged them and halted their work pursuing justice on behalf of war crimes victims around the world.

As a result of the order in June threatening “serious consequences” for anyone giving support to the work of the international criminal court (ICC) in The Hague, the lawyers say they have had to cancel speeches and presentations, end research, abandon writing ICC-related articles and dispensing advice and assistance to victims of atrocities.

The executive order was followed in September by the imposition of sanctions – originally designed to be used for drug traffickers and terrorists – against the ICC chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, and another senior ICC official.

Announcing the sanctions, the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, did not give any specific reasons for the move other than to say the ICC “continues to target Americans” and that Bensouda was “materially assisting” that alleged effort.

The US also opposes ICC scrutiny of potential Israeli crimes against Palestinians as part of an investigation that also looks at abuses carried out by Palestinian security forces.

The US was roundly condemned for its anti-ICC campaign, which was not supported by any other western democracy or US ally apart from Israel.

“This is just a wallop, a gut punch, silencing the activities that really have been my life’s work,” said Diane Marie Amann, professor of international law at the University of Georgia and one of the plaintiffs.

Amann has served as an unpaid special adviser to Bensouda on children in conflict since 2012.

“I work on behalf of children who are affected by armed conflict, who are killed, tortured, sexually abused, forced to become child soldiers, and trafficked,” Amann said, adding that she has had to curtail her work as a result of the US targeting of Bensouda, or face the risk of personal sanctions possibly including the seizure of her family’s assets.

How long before some fascist Trump fanatic rolls up and accuses the ICC of being a Marxist organisation allied to BLM and Antifa.

Trump administration cuts legal funding for victims of human trafficking

This was done through Trump's Labor Secretary, Alex Acosta, who slashed fund to fight child sex trafficking by 80 percent. Alex Acosta also helped Epstein receive a drastically lower sentence for child sex trafficking; Epstein and Trump were friends. Their close association was discussed in detail here: Thread 186708

Trump is a terrible, selfish, disgusting human being. This isn't even debatable.

What's aggravating is how much more attention Trump being a loudmouthed child on a useless debate will get than this. Hiss damage to the world is ongoing and in full display, but they get dwarfed by media coverage of his antics.

The drama of the debates, frustratingly, infuriatingly, get better ratings than Trump shutting down human rights groups.

you do realize the icc has no jurisdiction over US citizens dont you?

Instead of obsessing over this matter, see if you can find out why they are not concerned with chinas child slaves or russias invasion of sovereign countries (Crimea) or syrian genocide or china invasion of hong kong.

Trump's been doing this since he announced his candidacy.

The faster he does or says outrageous things, we don't have time to call him out on all of them. Something falls through the cracks and he gets away with it. Again.

This thread is about some really, really, really disgusting s---. It's like he's no longer afraid of appearing to be who he is. This kind of thing is expected after he wins a second term, but I didn't expect this level of scumbaggery quite yet.

Why don't you tell us why? And then explain to us how an administration with ANY morals whatsoever can do these things. You isolationist freaks like Pat Buchanan have no empathy for suffering people in other countries. But then again, I also don't see these same people working to improve lives in THIS country, either, so that's a piss-poor excuse for not standing up and doing what is right.

Glad you bought that up. The article states Trump's reason for silencing them is because the ICC "continues to target Americans”.

Seems you've caught Trump in a lie.

@kevcvs57

Domestic law does not exist for Donald Trump, except when he can twist it to harass his rivals and opponents. Why should international law be any different for him?

If the ICC has no jurisdiction over Americans, the ICC cannot target them. DUH.

His brazenness knows no bounds. I expect the ACLU will challenge this. Trump might then try to have the State Dept declare the ICC a terrorist organization.
