can we agree that finding the truth is impeded by some things?

* being stuck in ideology
* using inflamatory rhetoric instead of discussing the merit of a statement.
* being boneheaded about a hypothesis, altering the "originally intended" meaning when proven wrong.

Consequences:
* can we engage in polite conversation (if I moderated the site I would remove ALL posts with expletives. These normally don't add to substance)
* can we engage in serious discussion of clearly formulated hypothesis?

That would be great

@Ponderable

In order to find truth, one must be willing and prepared to be challenged in what one believes, and to abandon what one was most thoroughly convinced of in the face of hard evidence. In order to find truth, one must be willing and able to admit one was wrong. In order to find truth, one must put one's ego in abeyance. That, my friend, is the single most insuperable impediment to finding truth.

A conversation with AJ where I couldn’t call him an idiot?
What would we talk about 🤔
Nice idea ponderable but I can’t see it getting off the ground. I think we are too estranged in terms of our philosophies to have a rational conversation.
I did notice when a lot of the more extreme right and left wing posters were banned a while ago there were some very nuanced and reasonably civil debates. Although the forum was a lot quieter in general and I came close to looking elsewhere for a good venting session.

But of course you don't consider yourself in that category.

Pondy (and moonbus), I am not sure truth is being sought in political ideology.
It is a matter of preferring a "style" where no particular -ology is most correct.

Some people love freedom style, some love totalitarian. you can't have both so we fight.

But we are not talking about a football game. we are talking about politics, real POWER.

Oh really...?

But when it comes to talking about slavery -just as one example, you would prefer to start many a thread highlighting America's delve into slavery, as opposed to your tribe's - China's ongoing slavery of a far harsher kind, and a slavery that has been ongoing since ancient times.

uh huh.

nothing tribal with the Princess... Nooooooooooooooo

Do you make the same allowance for the killing of millions of Jews and their subsequent grant of the land of Israel?

@Duchess64 - Earl of Trumps 'knows' nothing of China's long complex history other than racist stereotypes.

I see. So Wikipedia should be ignored?

China has - by far and away, the longest history of slavery of any ethnic group in the world. China's use of slavery has been ongoing and continual since ancient times and is raging in China as we speak.

that's *your* tribe, Princess

By all means, the genocide by the Nazis has to be in the mix, but it is dwarfed by the genocides of both, Mao and Stalin, but especially Mao.

Funny how Duchess64 claims that Americans will hold Chinese more accountable due to ethnic (tribal) bias, but it is clear here that Hitler and the Nazis take the big hit in the eyes of White Westerners.

I could hardly fail to disagree with you less. Where political power is the issue, truth takes a back seat. We saw that in particularly blatant form in the previous U.S. presidential election: Trump didn't offer even a pretence of truth any more. He lied through his teeth throughout the entire campaign.

I took Pondy to be talking about finding truth here in RHP forums. There's no power at stake here, so, the chance of finding truth is marginally better than in the rough and tumble of real-world politics.

The Internet can still be a trap for the unwary. There have been reports recently about people who fell down the conspiracy-theory rabbit hole and managed to get out again:
