Professional footballers set children a 'bad example'
Football should only be shown on TV after 9pm because of the bad example it sets to children, a leading head teacher has said.
Verbal abuse, cheating and violence among players are commonplace, Martin Ward, deputy leader of the Secondary Heads Association has claimed.

He said copycat behaviour by pupils makes teaching "infinitely more difficult".

"Violence, verbal abuse, foul language, cheating and defiance of authority...occur much more frequently outside school and, in particular, in professional football, often without the player even being cautioned", Martin Ward said.

Do professional footballplayers indeed set children a bad example ?

Have you noticed children indeed copying "violence, verbal abuse, foul language, cheating and defiance of authority" ?

Well I guess you are talking about what we Americans call "soccer", right and not American football? Assuming this is the case, I will speak about American football because I think it applies.

I think our football is very similiar to your rugby and I used to play it on the high school level. It's extremely violent and although I enjoy watching it, there is no real good reason why it should not be banned in its current form.

Many of those who are talented enough to play at the professional level don't finish their college education and jump right in. With this being the case, these are "kids" themselves who lack the maturity to behave like gentlemen. They tend to get into trouble for drugs, rape, and other stupid stuff. Unfortunately this is always splatter over the sports news and this is what most of the younger kids see.

I think the answer is to enforce some sort of code of conduct for professionals of all sports. Nothing too crazy but just common sense stuff. If violated, hit them where it hurts the most: both their bank account & their ability to play.

Well I'm not the puratanical type, but I do find the four-letter outbursts and bullying of referees rather tiresome. Not being a parent or a teacher, I can't really comment on the effects on children, but it certainly doesn't set a great example. The frustrating thing is that it's a very simple problem to solve. Any player who complains against a referee should receive an instant booking and anyone who swears at the ref should go straight off. Managers wouldn't put up with losing their players early and would very quickly clamp down on the miscreants.

Rich.

What about dancing around like a bunch of pansies when they score or howling and blubbering like two-year olds whenever they fall over and graze their knee?

Doesn' that set a worse example for children?

Hell yeah. The worst thing they do is fall over crying when someone taps them on the ankle. They're a bunch of pussies. Censor the lot of em!

"If ever there was one moment when Wayne 'Buck' Shelford embedded his name forever into rugby's rich history, it was during the infamous 'Battle of Nantes' in 1986.

"Playing only his second Test for the All Blacks against a physically intimidating French side, Shelford found himself at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck on 20 minutes."

"An errant Les Bleus stud found its way to his groin, where it somehow managed to tear his scrotum, leaving one testicle hanging out.

"This alone would leave most men screaming in agony and heading for the nearest hospital. But not Shelford.

"He calmly instructed the physio to stitch him up.

"The French public were gobsmacked as an over-eager pitchside cameraman filmed the stomach-turning surgery, and even more so when Shelford returned to the field and carried on playing..."

["I was knocked out cold, lost a few teeth and had a few stitches down below," Shelford later recalled. "It's a game I still can't remember... I don't really want to either." (New Zealand lost 16-3.)]

Now that is how to play football.

Why not, we can ban all books that have a modicum of violence in them as well. Then, we can eliminate all evidence of competition within schools, you know, to make sure that no-one ends up coming last....

...Why don't these people just get a life?

No no no no you're getting it all wrong. Violence is fine. It's the sex, nudity and naughty words that cause all the damage.

To censor what children see on TV is puritanical and stupid. A parent who does this is a little bit too protective. A teacher who suggests this is a control freak. Now, I don't know if we're talking about American football or British, but these are just sports. Innocent sports. However, it is not innocent when the players start fouling for no reason, raping people off the field, and generally setting a bad example. Football isn't bad, just the players.

I don't agree with what you said..

Kids are just receptors and look around them for behavoiur to emulate.
Monkey see, monkey do.

I think stopping them from watching football is just daft, even if a kid is able to lip read a cuss that a player says then i guess its up to their parents to simple let them know that thats wrong. Its sport and the odd curse is only a tiny tiny part of it.

And I bet its not as if they haven't heard it on the playground anyway.

As for letting them watch whatever they want.. No way! Have u watched tv lately? From jackass to late night bravo channel, i certain won't want my kids to be exposed to sex/violence/consumer driven crappola/perfect bodies at an early age.

I just saw a survey on the bbc recently that said 6 year old girls are already worrying about their weight. WTF are we trying to turn our society into??

What?! You just totally agreed to what I said except that I think there is nothing wrong with the sport. Also: 6-year-olds worry about their weight? This is NOT good.

Nope 😉

I disagree with this statement 100%

"To censor what children see on TV is puritanical and stupid"

I think sport isn't one of the things that should be censored but theres plenty that should!
I think its wrong for a parent to put a TV in a kids bedroom and let them watch whatever they want.

Football without passion is about as exciting as England friendly.
A bit of fight, and nastiness makes a team successful.
Having said that players should respect the ref. Or be punished harder than they are now.
