The U.K.'s two governing ["Right + Left"] coalition parties both made pre-election promises to "roll back the surveillance state". Right wing papers have come out against it. Left wing papers have come out against it. Who wants it? Who's pushing for it? Who will win votes, and how, from the way this issue plays out?

I don't want it. I can only inagine idiot readers of 'Sun', Express', and ' Mail' might like it wrongly assuming that it is aimed at islamic terrorists and not themselves.

However this does not explain the govts desire for it as the above electorate vote for them anyway. Perhaps govts have always wanted this power and feel that now is the best oppurtunity.

The Daily Mail appears to be against it. What about The Sun and The Express? Have they broken rank with [what appears to be] a consensus among U.K. dailies?

I was maybe generalising a bit, to be fair the daily mail is more a tory back benchers paper and one of them was the first to condemn the plan. I believe a coalition spokesman for the legislation posted an article in the Sun today.

I still feel that usual suspects when it comes to bashing welfare cheats and johnny foreigner will come out for the plan.

There is no Left or Right in Britain only the vested interests and the corperate interests.
The "Old Boy's" still run things.... be in no doubt.

They will get this new intrusion passed.

They may get it passed but if the electorate make it an issue it will not be long before one sector of the 'old boys' breaks ranks and offers to repeal it if there is an electoral advantage.

I think fmf was asking who are the vested interests that would gain from this legislation. I am sure the labour party will be waiting to gauge the electorates reaction to it.

In Britain as in America there are huge interests seeking to extend the surveillance industry.

China has shown what might be possible with this technology.

It will be interesting to see if the British are more protective of their civil rights than the Americans have been. I am not so sure but there is at least one (probably more) campaign fighthing it. http://www.38degrees.org.uk/campaigns

No2ID is also campaigning on this issue.

And in answer to the op.
I don't want it. Nobody in my family wants it. And nobody I know (and have asked) wants it.

The government wants it... And some gullible souls who buy their bull might also want it.
