I wish I knew my Irish name. We're Bensons, which I think is technically English.

Who can tell whether we are sons of the Norse sea raiders, Celts, Angles, Saxons, Danes or Normans? The Kingdom of Strathclyde once ran from Glasgow to the North of Wales and after the Normans pushed the Saxons north they entered Northern England and lowland Scotland, the vestiges of which are still seen in the language to this day. If his surname has been Anglicised then has he not every right to a claim of Celtic heritage and even if it is not, we welcome him as one of our own, an honorary Celt, for we are not ones to balk at technicalities 🙂

What is it about 1/16 or 1/32ness that lead people towards distancing themselves from any overt connectedness?

Nope, Benson is a common Anglicized Irish name.
