Denton's recruitment package would eventually include a $275,000 salary, $68,750 as a moving allowance, improvements to the chancellor's on-campus residence which included a $30,000 dog pen initially budgeted at $7,000. Included in the deal was a tenured professorial appointment with a $192,000 salary, and a ho ...[text shortened]... student fees, up 79 percent in four years, and low pay raises for clerical and service staff.
That salary is for being the chancellor (chief executive) of the university . 😕

Would you use Bill Gates' salary to illustrate what the average software engineer earns? No. Why not? Because that would be dumb.

the theory is, if we don't pay top dollar, we can't get top talent.

the actuality is there is high demand for these jobs. lots of new grads aren't going to make it onto the gravy train.

so where's the supply/demand curve? why aren't salaries going down?

And cerebral quests aside, a life in academia comes with other perks.

For one, college teachers typically make good salaries in the local job market.

At OTC, the mid-range of pay is $44,000 to $48,000 for the faculty, said Marla Moody, vice president of finance at the community college.

At Missouri State University, the average pay for a full professor is $75,420; an associate professor makes $60,176 on average; and an assistant professor earns an average salary of $55,193.

And they typically have a good calendar: they work nine months a year, have the winter break and can take the summer months off.

They can teach summer courses for additional pay.

At MSU, staff get extra days off between Christmas and New Year's Day.

In addition to the more common fringe benefits such as health insurance, it's also not uncommon for a university to offer employees tuition waivers and access to various campus programs and events, said Ed Choate, director of human resources at MSU.

And there is the job security. "It's extremely stable," Higdon of OTC said.

Despite all the caps and exclamations, that's irrelevant. If you want to say university professors are overpaid, giving the example of a chief executive is not going to make your case.

It's not 9 months work. Classes are not the only thing university professors do. Not even half the time spent by university professors on work is related to classes.

25 at UCSC earn more than $200K

SANTA CRUZ -- Although 25 administrators and professors at UC Santa Cruz earned $200,000 or more in 2008, the campus has the lowest faculty salaries of all nine of the University of California's undergraduate campuses, according to salary information released recently by the university.

    ...

"Generally, people are sort of shocked by how much top administrators and the highest-paid faculty get paid," said Santa Cruz Councilman Mike Rotkin, a longtime lecturer at UCSC. "The person who runs the city of Santa Cruz doesn't make that much money."

    ...

Remarking on recent Sentinel salary reports citing public employees who earn more than $100,000 annually, Blumenthal said, "My embarrassment is that we have so few at UCSC who make six-figure salaries."

earth to Palynka: classes are what students are paying tuition for.
