@suzianne saidI can’t figure out what it’s supposed to be. In the book apparently it WAS a laser generated by the “pulse plasma” but in the movie they removed the “laser” part. Plasma weapons would be like Star Wars blasters but what is the mechanism behind generating and keeping the plasma concentrated?
A "phased plasma" rifle wouldn't need a lot of wattage, I'm thinking.
Maybe it’s a solid projectile reacting in such a way that it converts itself to plasma with a solid core? The “magnetic bottle” idea never seemed plausible to me.
@sonhouse saidScience Fiction is where some inventions first see the light of day e.g. submarines, tanks (40,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Land Ironclads)
@AThousandYoung
Doesn't matter much since it is total bullshyte anyway.
@athousandyoung saidOne of these beauties (https://mccaffreycrafts.com/collections/blackthorn-shillelagh?page=1) or the molded polypropylene knockoffs?

@no1marauder saidIt's actual blackthorn wood like those. Some of the bark is peeling off. The knob is a little smaller and browner on mine; just right for holding in the palm or bopping off a stupid person's noggin. I paid fifty bucks for it. Looks roughly like this:
