Is it a real weapon that ordinary folks can use? What does it fire? military lasers are now at the 30,000 watt level, enough to destroy small boats.
Is that weapon like that?

I can’t figure out what it’s supposed to be. In the book apparently it WAS a laser generated by the “pulse plasma” but in the movie they removed the “laser” part. Plasma weapons would be like Star Wars blasters but what is the mechanism behind generating and keeping the plasma concentrated?

Maybe it’s a solid projectile reacting in such a way that it converts itself to plasma with a solid core? The “magnetic bottle” idea never seemed plausible to me.

It's actual blackthorn wood like those. Some of the bark is peeling off. The knob is a little smaller and browner on mine; just right for holding in the palm or bopping off a stupid person's noggin. I paid fifty bucks for it. Looks roughly like this:
