No this isn't a joke about democrats....or republicans. In this country it is possible to vote even if incompetent or demented. Should people with alzheimers disease be allowed to vote? I am well aware that there are early stages of the disease where they can live fairly normally with some help. I say "no". How 'bout you.

It's an interesting question. In THIS country not only is it possible for people with dementia to vote, it's probably compulsory. All adult Australians must vote and I'm not aware of there being an exception based on lack of mental faculties. Maybe there is one. I've never really thought about this before.

I'm sure some legal argument could be mounted about voting being about making a choice, and people who are not capable of making a choice should therefore be excluded.

As I recall people gave Reagan a hard way to go when he testified in the Iran-Contra hearings that he couldn't remember a lot of details. People were really shocked at his poor recall. It wasn't until after he was diagnosed with Alzheimers that people started to say "well, OK, that makes sense now."

Woodrow Wilson was probably the most incapacitated president following a stroke he had. It is widely believed that his wife acted as president following his stroke.

How do you assess incompetence or dementia? If you restrict them, who else do you restrict?

Tough call. Best I can offer is have someone assume power of attorney and vote accorrding to whatever he/she deems the person would vote.

No, voters should not be restricted in any way once they have reached the age of universal sufferage. As someone said above, if one demographic is to be restricted then what next? Should working class or uneducated citizens be restricted from voting unless they pass a test confirming that they possess a firm grasp of the issues? No, of course not. To attempt any such measure is to go down the road of dictatorship, however benevolent or well intentioned. Voting is a private independent act which must not be restricted or interfered with in any way.
