The post that was quoted here has been removedI think most people are aware of the conflict between the Ethiopian central government and the Tigray region but due to a lack of access to the region by reporters its hard to follow events.
CNN aired a very disturbing report based on phone footage and satellite mapping to pin down the location which showed Ethiopian regulars kidnapping and shooting to death a group of Tigray civilians.
But yes no sanctions and no heated discussions at the UN as far as I’m aware.
The post that was quoted here has been removedI strongly suspect that a good % of westerners could locate Tigray we do have some previous in the region.
I’m sure if the west could be certain of culpability of the Ethiopian government they would and most likely have condemned it. I guess it would be handy if some big eastern powers got animated over this whereby we could get some action via the security council, same goes for Myanmar.

French students may be taught in school about France's former colonies in Africa.
But Ethiopia was never one of them. ”
Are you ok? Me thinks duchess64 doth not read other people’s posts before critiquing them. Where have I protested about Western ignorance.
Am I French umm no I’m not. Your fantasy that because Ethiopia was never colonised and remained independent, other than the short period of ‘Italian Ethiopia’ the British were active all over that region. Having a full colonial role in Kenya the idea that it would have no knowledge of Ethiopia and its tribal make up is beyond naive.
Am I American umm no I’m not and I studied East African history in a pre university higher course. Maybe you easterners should stop trying to stereotype westerners for the purposes of arrogant racism and treat us as human beings with idiosyncratic faults and virtues.

The post that was quoted here has been removedI’ll take a bet that more westerners would be able to than easterners which was my point rather than a lot of westerners being able to locate Tigray.
I’m still at a loss to understand the point your trying to make I wouldn’t be able to identify Hertfordshire on an unmarked map, that does not make me ignorant of Hertfordshire.
What you should or could have said is that few people would be able to identify the Tigray region on an unmarked map, it’s not an ignorance peculiar to westerners.
It was a best a blocking or misdirecting statement because experts in the field have identified where it took place and that the perpetrators were wearing official Ethiopian army uniforms plus regimental insignia and talking fluently in the official language and dialect of the Ethiopian army.
My feeling is that this is very strong evidence of an atrocity committed by the Ethiopian army.
“made the silly response that he's not American and even apparently insinuated
that Americans should not be counted as Westerners!”
Your ignorance is very much on display today, why when talking to a Brit are you levelling an accusation of ignorance based on your bigoted and stereotypical view of general US ignorance and why is it relevant to the topic?
It seems almost impossible to have have an intelligent conversation about anything with a committed racist.
How many easterners do you suppose have studied East African history, what’s your point? You do not need to study any subject to feel empathy toward a group of people being treated in this way. It might be relevant to note that given the lack of colonisation of Ethiopia during the ‘Scramble for Africa’ this is a wholly internal and long lived division within Ethiopia itself but probably no less intractable. Probably not unrelated to the Ethiopian/ Eritrean conflict given the Tigray region borders Eritrea to the north. Tribal loyalties may not run exactly in line with the legal borders of federalised Ethiopia.
I do not know one person who thinks Iranians are Arabs but some might still wrongly describe them as Persians.

"A professor (from Africa) told me that he asked his undergraduate class at an
American university (with above average academic standards) to name as many
countries in Africa as they could. None of them could even name more than a
handful of sub-Saharan African countries (South Africa was the most common),
let alone locate them on an unmarked map."

Note the arrogant ethnically Chinese duchess cannot hold a debate without spewing racist stereotypes concerning non ethically Chinese even when the stereotype has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic of the thread.
Did you duchess? Did you once speak to a professor from Africa who agreed with your racist stereotype of westerners and US citizens in particular. A half decent liar would’ve narrowed that down a bit, but maybe they could not point out where they born on an unmarked map of Africa.
“ Note that the arrogant Brit Kevcvs57 then attempted to deny that Westerners could be
ignorant of Africa by insinuating, in effect, that Americans should not really be counted as Westerners.”
I shall take it as a backhanded compliment that you’ve had to resort to blatantly lying about what I’ve written in order to try and debate this topic with me. Two lies in one sentence, that’s excellent duchess it’s almost as if you do this lying thing quite a lot.
“In fact, that professor (who earned university degrees in France and the USA) said
that he would have to lecture his American students that (seriously):
"Africa is not only country; Africa consists of many countries."
When he asked them if they had any questions for him about life in Africa, sometimes
he was asked, "Do black people still live in trees in Africa?"
😂😂 I’m not even going to address that lie.
“ Now Kevcvs57 may like to boast that Brits know much more than Americans about Africa.
That might be true (I don't know) about some former British colonies in Africa.
My much more honest white British friends criticize the poor state of British education.”
No I would not like to boast based on any generalities vis-à-vis Brits and Americans because I’ve learned, indeed I was taught not to deal in stereotypes or generalities when studying or discussing societies and cultures, not even your own.
This is how I know you are not an historian duchess, your debating style and content could not put you further from that discipline and given that lie what are the chances that the rest of your biography holds any truths.
“ In reality, Tigray is an obscure region in an obscure country, Ethiopia, in a continent,
Africa, that's generally poorly covered in Western media. Some Westerners may
have paid a bit more attention to Ethiopia because it's predominantly Christian
and had some publicized famines. But I expect that most Westerners know hardly
anything about Italy's wars (plural emphasized) against Ethiopia.”
Perhaps Ethiopia is an obscure country from a Chinese perspective but certainly in the UK I doubt that there are many who haven’t heard of it, even if only in its connection with Rastafarianism through Haile Selassie, maybe they may have heard the countries name mentioned by Bob Geldof during the ‘Band Aid’ concert.
I seriously begin to wonder if you’ve ever been to the UK or the US such is your absolute ignorance concerning both countries and their citizens.

Almost certainly a lie
“ Note that the arrogant Brit Kevcvs57 then attempted to deny that Westerners could be
ignorant of Africa by insinuating, in effect, that Americans should not really be counted as Westerners.”
Definitely a lie
“ In fact, that professor (who earned university degrees in France and the USA) said

"Africa is not only country; Africa consists of many countries."
When he asked them if they had any questions for him about life in Africa, sometimes

Some, but far from all, of his African American students knew more than his white Americans student about Africa.”
Possibly not a lie but totally irrelevant in any case the topic is about the atrocity in Tigray not the geographical ignorance of westerners with the US singled for some reason.
“ Now Kevcvs57 may like to boast that Brits know much more than Americans about Africa.
That might be true (I don't know) about some former British colonies in Africa.
My much more honest white British friends criticize the poor state of British education.”
A nice variation we have a circular lie based on the duchess’s imaginary African ( we have no idea where in Africa, perhaps she couldn’t think of an African country because her phone is playing up) Professors original lie about American university Students who thought that maybe Africans live in trees 😂

Pure supposition based on the ethnically Chinese posters prejudice against non Chinese occidental’s taken to the ridiculous level of parody.
If the duchess had been living in the old holiday towns on the south east coast of England in the late 70s and early 80s she too would met many self described Persians who were fleeing the revolution.
