No, the British (and South Africans, let's not forget) drive on the left side of
the road, not the right.

Of course he did, which is why I thought I was very funny there. 😞

Left is right. I found it much easier to adapt to left-hand traffic than to right-hand traffic, despite having lived in right-hand traffic countries most of my life (only three months in a left-hand traffic country). I still haven't got used to right-hand traffic.

Left, right, side of the road - who cares? The point is we need unison
rules all over the world to avoid accidents like yesterday (or midrails
which have been very successfull as I understand it).

Though the only time left is right is in politics, but we all know this
anyway.

Wait a minute. Why would it be easier to switch seat to the right and
keep the car on the left side of the road, than to sit in the left seat and
keep the car on the right side off the road? If you do it everyday it
should make no difference. The problems arise when you're used to one
and then have to do the other? I don't understand. 😞

I agree but it needs to be phased in and not rushed.

First we should try it with buses and lorries driving on the right.

If that works....

When will Americans start using the metric system?

Why don't we just make all roads into one ways or highways then we can drive down the middle!

Does anyone have any stats as to how many countries drive on which side? What about how many left or right hand drive vehicles exist or are sold each year?

Changing the side of the road requires changing all vehicles, as well as some major road works at all interchanges.

When is the last time a country changed sides and what did it cost?

The cost! It's always about the cost for some people. 🙄

How's this for cost?

"The announcement comes as commissioners argue over another
proposal which would force carmakers to drastically increase the fuel
efficiency of the average car sold in Europe."

The Swedes did actually do this you know. I don't know how much it cost or how many people died as a result though.

These are all trivialities easily overcome with the will to do so. Besides, think
of all the job opportunities you'd have. Now, if there's anything that can
swing the economy upwards, it's when a lot of people make money, because
they tend to spend money when they feel safe and secure, which they do
when they have jobs. Spending money means more tax money, which
means a healthier society all together. It's all peachy. Now, cheer up and
don't disagree with me.

this is a ridiculous post.... are you saying if we all drive on the same side they're be no more accidents on the road at all.... could you imagine how many accidents there would be if a country swapped.... for some people it would take months to adjust.... if you drive in another country drive on their side.... you're in their country... accept it and move on and adopt their ways... if you cant, go home....

global warming.... terrorism.... bush.... i think the planet has more pressing issues....

Well, apparently some have a problem with this, which is why this person
had to die the other day, but unless I'm mistaking there weren't too
many problems when we changed from left to right in Sweden (though, of
course you'd have to take into account the superior intellect and
flexibility of the average swede).

For those who can't seem to adjust very well it would be benefitial if the
whole world used the same rules for traffic. Can you think of any reason
why we shouldn't change so that you can easily drive in any part of the
world?

Global warming, terrorism, Bush and all those other "pressing" issues
has been debated ad nauseum in this forum. Just choose one page on
random and I'm sure you'll find lots of reading (same reading as in all
other threads) on those "pressing" issues. Do we get anywhere
constructive with it? No. Boneheads are still boneheads, and I'm still
much wiser than most. That's just the way of nature, really. 😏
